My first experience with special needs was when I was 9 years old and my nephew was born. He spent 6 months in the NICU and came home on a ventilator and with severe brain damage due to complications during birth. He was non-ambulatory, had a shunt, and a feeding tube. I have experience with suctioning and trache care as well. I also have extensive experience with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders through my work at a psychiatric facility specializing in kids with these diagnoses and behavioral challenges. I have worked with a range of kiddos from totally nonverbal and unable to sign, not toilet trained, to completely verbal and toilet trained and just struggling with sensory, structure, or mood issues that come along with these diagnoses.
