I have worked with a variety of elderly that have special needs. I currently volunteer for a hospice, where I take of people that have been diagnosed with an illness that is only giving them 6 months or less to live. I worked with patients that have had leukemia and were breathing out of an oxygen tank, patients with Parkinson's disease, different forms of dementia including Alzheimer's, anxiety, depression, and isolation. I enjoy working with these people because I feel like I am making a difference in their lives. I come to work happy and leave happy because I am serving them. A lot of the times, they are happy and thankful. Every once in a while, I have a patient that is mad at their situation and may not be happy but I still work to treat this person with respect and help them in every way that I can. I serve cooked meals to the patients, bathe them, change them, get them ready for bed, walk with them, talk to them and listen, which I have found to be the most important one. I can also help apply lotion, put their shoes on, and help them with other things like their television and their radio. I can brush their hair, take out their dentures, paint their nails and dye their hair.
