I have six years of experience babysitting children (newborn-early teens) as well as teaching swim to children ages K-6, including children with special needs. I frequently watch up to five children at a time.
Children want to be heard. I do my best to maintain this truth by listening to what they have to say and incorporating that into how we proceed. My motto is work then play, but I do my best to make both equally engaging.
Earning respect of the child is what I believe to be the key factor in making a recurring job function. In this way, the child is willing to work with me to do what needs to be done (homework, chores, etc.) in order to do what they would like to do later.
Television and electronics use depend on the house rules, of course, but I do usually prefer doing arts and crafts projects with the kids! I also usually incorporate reading time for the child to read a book they enjoy or for a storytime (for younger children).
