I have spent the last 10 years caring for and being a companion to a dementia patient full time. She passed away in July of 2024. When I started, she was fully capable of running away and doing as she pleased she was highly upset that her car keys were taken away but slow forgot about that and everything else as time went on. I've learned to enjoy my time with the elderly and listen to their life stories and lessons but also how to guide them into their new lives without too much upset or embarrassment because they are losing control of everything they used to have.
