From 1998 to 2019, I successfully homeschooled my 4 children K-12: the two oldest have jobs in their majors (CPA/Finance & Business/Marketing), the youngest graduated in May, 2023 (Business/Sociology & Chemistry/Art). All received 90% to full-tuition scholarships. From the NAEP test scores (1998 to 2019), we know that only 1/3 of all 8th graders in the nation reach proficiency in math, reading, writing, science, & history. I have been very successful teaching children to read using a wonderful curriculum that focuses on the sounds letters make (phonetics-based). I use a world-class math curriculum that moves from concrete (hands-on), to pictorial, then to abstract, helping children build solid foundations in math skills. We've also known for some time that art stimulates/enhances brain function and well-being, which is why incorporating art into lessons can be fun and meaningful.
