I came to value time with and care for seniors through regular volunteering at a nursing home and hospice care facility with my now departed trained therapy dog, Francis. As a writer and a part-time nonprofit consultant, my career has focused on serving vulnerable populations and I have had the privilege to bring dignity and respect to elders in diverse professional and service settings. I am recently returned to my hometown of Lakewood to continue part-time non-profit consulting work and seek additional part-time opportunities in the area as well. Now that I am home again, I visit and help care for my maternal Grandma (98) and Great Aunt (85) often. I do things like take them to the doctor or hospital, manage prescriptions, do the shopping and run errands and provide transportation when they need it. We also like to take outings to the Art Museum and Botanical Gardens or sometimes just a nice drive along the lake or down in the MetroParks. We enjoy reading and discussing books and current events and I like to hear them tell the stories of their lives and talk about history in general. I also grew up visiting my paternal grandpa in a nursing home where he was treated for over a decade due to early onset Parkinson's disease. Watching his decline and then my grandmother's (his wife's) inability to live on without him was heartbreaking and touching and an experience I felt privileged to have witnessed. All my grandparents are brilliant and exceptional people who lived fascinating lives. I was inspired to volunteer at a nursing home and hospice with my service dog out of gratitude for the compassionate and dignified care that both my grandparents received in the sunset of their lives. I believe that I possess the maturity and perspective necessary to provide the sort of care I would want for the elders in my own family, and I believe there is much beauty and wisdom that elders can offer the loved ones and caregivers in their lives. I am highly educated, gentle, witty, thoughtful and in possession of a bright spirit. I hope to bring vitality to those whose care I might be privileged to provide.
