For as long as I can remember, I've enjoyed helping others and have gone out of my way to volunteer, so it makes sense that I've chosen to work in a field that lets me to just that. I've been a 1:1 aide for an elementary school-aged child with cerebral palsy, and also a classroom aide for a Self-Contained Learning Disabilities class (also elementary level). Most recently, I worked for Easter Seals for 4 years in early intervention (ages 0-3). I was a speech-language pathology assistant, but our work was transdisciplinary and I gained experience working with children who had a BIG variety of needs and goals. I love being part of the process as a child develops his/her skills and learns more about the world. In these positions, I excelled at meeting children where they were at and having productive time with them, while still making it fun - I think that's so important! I'm also an experienced babysitter and have done some nannying. In a world that can seem dominated by therapy appointments and doctors, I never forget that these are children first, and they need some time to just be kids!
