Last year I completed my degree in Marriage and Family therapy from the University of La Verne. I have dedicated my life to the service of others and was inspired to seek a position in social service after watching the struggles my brother faced. During my last year of my graduate program I assisted my younger brother, who has Aspergers syndrome, with daily living tasks to help him develop a greater sense of independence. He lived with me for about a year and we worked together to develop skills he would need to become more independent. These skills included financial planning, grocery shopping/meal preparation guidelines, hygiene schedules, and detailed public transportation navigation. I cannot begin to express how proud I am of my brother and of the progress he made towards becoming more independent and self reliant. Although he constantly expresses gratitude to me for how I have helped him, it is I who must remind him of how much his strength has motivated me to continue doing the work his disorder inspired me to begin doing in the first place.
