Meet Jona

Hi, my name is Jona.

I am male, 40 years old, and currently live in West Los Angeles.

For a period of two years, I was employed as a live-in caregiver for a senior woman with dementia. My duties with her included: transfer to and from wheelchair, bathroom assistance, dressing, occasional bathing, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, day-trips, and administering medication.

Beyond the duties, an important aspect of my work with her was "being present" - aware of her moment-to-moment needs - and providing companionship. Working with her was a wonderful experience.

In addition, I worked as caregiver for a senior man. He suffered a stroke (and subsequently partial paralysis), and required assistance while being rehabilitated.

I enjoy helping others, and always act with his or her well-being first in mind.

Thank you, and best wishes.

Jona was our live-in caregiver for my mother Frances, who passed away in July 2014. He had been with us for about 2 1/2 years before that, and we found him to be extremely reliable and conscientious. My mom was 93 and wheelchair-bound when Jona started, and I remember being very impressed when, even during the initial interview, he jumped right in and began helping with some procedure or another that had to do with her care-giving. Jona neither smokes or drinks and is a health conscious vegetarian. He always began on time and rarely if ever took a day off other than the once a year vacation he took to spend a week with his family in New Jersey. His duties included getting her up and dressed in the morning, brushing her hair, putting on a little makeup for her and giving her breakfast and her medications before planning a morning activity which often included an outing if my mom were up to it. Otherwise he might play cards with her, read to her, show her some videos on YouTube, or just sit and provide her conversation and one-on-one attention. Sometimes he drew funny caricature portraits of her! As her health declined, Jonah was flexible in taking on whatever the new situation required including changing diapers. His hours were 9 AM to 1 PM and at the end of his shift he would settle her in for a nap. They had a lot of fun together and I was grateful to have found him and to be able to provide this valuable service for her at the end of her life. He definitely became one of the family and he was there with us at her bedside in our home when she drew her last breath. He put together a very beautiful montage of photos and music for her memorial service, I know that he worked very long and hard on that tribute. I might add as well that my mom was not always the most easy person to deal with but Jona was loving and patient. Without his help we would not have been able to provide the wonderful end-of-life experience that she was fortunate to have. I know that anybody looking for wonderful care for their loved one will be very lucky to have Jona be that care provider. Please feel free to give my contact info to anyone who needs more information about Jona. All my best, Amy
