I helped out with the PMD (Profound Mental Disabilities) class in high school. I also attended church and volunteered with the Sunshine Class for six years (Special needs individuals at Central United Methodist). I assisted in reading the Bible lessons, arts/crafts, VBS (Vacation Bible School) and walking to and from the sanctuary for the sermons. I volunteered at the Special Olympics for 4-5 years. I've been a human service assistant at the Pee Dee Center (SCDDSN) for almost 7 years. I do basic self care needs for my individuals such as bathing, oral care, changing diapers, cleaning closets, making beds, sweeping, mopping feeding my men meals and snacks transportation for on and off campus activities/outings, hands-on activities from board games to assisting with playing movies and television, coloring pictures, counting coins, shaving, combing hair, hanging clothes on a hanger, puzzles, buttoning, tying and zipping articles of clothing among other hands-on activities. I've worked with individuals with Autism, down syndrome, delayed self taught skills, mental illness, anxiety, semi aggression, obsessive compulsive disorder, blindness, non-verbal communication, wheel-chair bound and a few men with speech impediments. I have no special degrees but I have learned a lot from past experiences. I only expect to grow further in the field I have been a part of since I was 14 (I didn't actually make any profit until the end of 2008 though). I love what I do and I am blessed to be able to help others less fortunate than myself.
