I worked at Columbus Community Center in Salt Lake City, UT for over 2 years. Columbus is a facility which is dedicated to training person with all kinds of disabilities skills for life and dependence. My job was not only to manage multiple departments, provide a clean environment, but to create new ways to approach jobs to include everyone and to help those learn the tasks and reach goals and sometimes exceed their own expectations. I found it enjoyable working with and helping these special people believe in themselves and seeing their delight in success was the greatest feeling. I have worked with person with Autism, Mental disabilities, deafness, visual impairment (blindness), down syndrome, and many more. I know some sign language and have learns other no verbal communication methods as well. I have training in CPR and first aid. At Columbus, I was trained in what is called SOAR (Support Options Actions and Respect) which is designed to help steer situations to a better direction without disrespecting the person who may or may not be realizing their actions are not appropriate.
