I have a heart for ALL people but especially the elderly and children. After being a hand on caretaker for my uncle after his triple heart bypass and my mother after her stroke it opened my eyes to a lot. To recognize the physical, emotional and mental vulnerability that comes from a patient who was once very self sufficient but now due to illness lose a lot of their independence because of it while completely depending on the assistance of a family member, stranger or health professional can be devastating. That's where my empathy comes in the ability to understand and share their feelings to let them know its ok to be scared but entrust that I am there and I will do all that I can to be a diligent support system, a hand to hold, an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, a leaning post to hold them up when they're too tired to pull up on their own and a motivator to remind them to not give up on themselves. I have done that and love the feeling of reward it gives me to help.
