I have a great regard for the sensitivities of others and like to treat them the way I want to be treated. I treat those with special needs the same as I would anyone, but with one difference: an enormous compassion to assist them in any way I can. They need to be as involved in their ADL as possible; my role is to facilitate and to aid in their independence. Having said that, personal care is paramount, because to feel good one needs to look good. Bathing, shaving, styling--this is a basic right and I take pride in bringing that about. Having activities away from the house, going out to lunch--generally being involved with the world is another way to lighten the spirit. I look for the person within and not at the disability. After all, it could happen to me, and I still would want to be seen as a person.
