At Newfield High School I founded a Movie Club that regularly garnered the interest and attendance of a few students with autism. I learned to integrate these children in conversations and activities throughout the tenure of the program. Most notably, we cast one of our most sensitive members to play a lead role in a short film we produced as an entry to our annual film festival. The young man's parents attended the event and, after the screenings, requested a copy of the film that starred their terrific son. In short, I have a good deal of patience and creativity to work with children who have certain disabilities, so long as they are not extremely debilitating.
