I have experience tutoring first through seventh grade in Reading and Math as well as assisting in ESL classes. I also have two decades of experience encouraging my own sons in their learning.
When working with young readers I begin by assessing their phonics, phonemic awareness, and comprehension skills so that we can work at the appropriate level. I use a variety of methods to teach children phonics and decoding and to build reading comprehension, including games as much as possible.
I use manipulatives, such as counters, dice, and coins often in teaching Math to younger scholars.
I like to start with what the scholar is currently doing for homework and reinforce those skills with extra practice if necessary. I also work on basic skills which need to be reinforced and provide more challenging work when the scholar has grasped those concepts being covered in class. I strongly believe that children need to understand the why behind the answers. Whenever possible, I also review the scholar's tests/quizzes helping him/her correct any errors and also understand why he/she made those errors and come up with strategies to avoid them in the future.
I am passionate about learning and seek to make it as fun for my students as possible knowing that we learn more when we are having fun doing so. One of my greatest joys in life is seeing a scholar have that "light bulb" moment when he/she comprehends a concept and then watching them soar with that new knowledge and skill.
