I started providing type 1 diabetes care in May 2016 for a little girl named E. During my time with E, I administered insulin (shots and pump) and read her CGM. Additionally, I am able to do both CGM and pump site changes as needed. I have also worn a Dexcom myself (I have type 1. 5 diabetes). It was crucial for me to remind E that she is not alone, and that she is among the most brave children in the world. Getting pricked all day long is something I could show her I understand too. And that was a huge building block in creating a trusting relationship with her. Emotional stability goes hand-in-hand with BG stability. I have also taught preschool classes at Gymboree with children who are on the spectrum. I am very comfortable taking care of non-verbal children as well as high-functioning children. My main focus, as it is with diabetic children, is building trust. As long as I'm given clear direction from a parent/guardian, I am able to provide the best care possible.
