I have been working with individuals with special needs for over 3 years now and I absolutely love it. I am currently getting both my Master's in Special Education and my teaching credential for Special Education Moderate to Severe students. I work as a Paraprofessional at a nonpublic school for severe students. I love my job and the kids I work with. I also occasionally provide respite care over the weekend, and love being able to get to know the people I am working with in a more relaxed environment. I have previously worked as a direct care provider in a center based day program for adults. I worked there for 2 years and learned so much about working with individuals with developmental disabilities. Most of the clients in the program were considered "severe", and the majority had mobility challenges and needed toileting assistance. I learned how to use a Hoyer lift and how to administer g-tube feedings while at this position. I have also previously worked as a Behavior Therapist doing in-home ABA therapy. What I learned about behaviors and how to teach people with special needs has come in very handy everywhere I have worked! I have also previously worked at a Level 14 group home with teenagers with a severe emotional disturbance and/or mental illness, several of whom had a dual diagnosis of a high functioning developmental disability. I have 6 hours of CPI training, 20 hours of Pro-ACT I&II training, and 50+ hours of ABA training. I am trained in administering Diastat and have current CPR and First Aid certification. I have 2 children of my own, one who has special needs.
