In Hawaii, in local families we are always taking care of each other. I've been taking care of kids from when I was about 13-14 years old when I was a junior leader in Summer Fun, but also previous to that I would take care of my younger siblings, from cooking to cleaning to household chores. And when we got older, driving them to school, homework, driving them to extra-curricular activities, even help with just creativity of thinking of their future. I always wanted the little ones to know that with me, I will always be there to support them in whatever they want to do, but I will look out for them and guide them in the decisions and choices they make as well. I have a niece who is autistic, and I also help to watch her and I try to be as good as an aunty as I can to her by just loving her and letting her know I'm here. I do arts and crafts and I think of different ways where the kids can be kids but also learn at the same time. And just being an ear for them is great too!
