My past experience as an Assistant started in my senior year of high school where I opted to spend my free periods as the Band Teacher's Assistant, Morning Office Assistant and 8th Grade Art Assistant. I learned how to take the initiative to complete tasks with little supervision and I also had to adapt to learning new tasks very quickly. I then spent the next 4 years working for the department of Residence Life and Housing at The University of Akron as a Community Assistant and a Resident Assistant. Two of the toughest undergraduate, student jobs anyone can take on. As a Resident Assistant, I planned monthly community events such as game nights, birthday parties and holiday craft tables all with a very minimal budget and became very good at bargain hunting as well as negotiating prices. I had to run errands to pick up food and supplies as well as schedule meetings with donators and sponsors for the different events. Also, I was required to plan one large educational event a semester, with a budget of 200 dollars. My favorite was a live game board, which I hand-made, and adhered to the floor. The residents had to roll the life-size dice and then answer an education based trivia question for the space they landed on. It was a huge hit and the food was catered from Panera, which everyone loved. I also spent every move in and move out day packing carts and bins to move students into their rooms in the least amount of trips as possible. I gained a reputation for making it into a one trip deal for my lucky freshmen and their families. As a Community Assistant I spent my time at a front desk where I was the first source of information for anyone coming and going from the dorms. I answered the phone, filed paper work, promoted campus events and programs and checked all guests in and out to ensure a safe and controlled environment. The director of the residence hall, along with the front desk manager, would assign different tasks and jobs to be completed such as filing payroll, checking in on certain guest log ins, separating paperwork to be sent out, and sorting returned documents as well as running errands around the building. I must say that I really enjoyed both positions because they were fun and interesting, but, I also gained a lot of skills in the process that just can't be taught in a classroom. I learned how to work for someone as well as with someone to accomplish a goal. I learned how to be compassionate for another persons needs before my own, and I established a determination to always do my best and present my best work at all times. My fulfillment in life comes from not only knowing that I was able to assist someone in their job or help their day go a little smoother, but it also comes from seeing the results of that hard work.
