I specialize in reading and writing instruction, critical thinking, preparation for state English/Language Arts and Math tests, Italian as a foreign language, homework help, and study skills. My individualized tutoring will re-mediate or accelerate your child's education, depending on his or her needs. I am very organized and patient with my students and can easily establish a positive rapport with them. I will use tests as well as student report cards/classwork to assess the child's level and to create realistic goals, building on what he or she knows academically as well as building on their self-esteem. I keep a journal of their progress and refer to it frequently to address weakness as well as strengths.
My educational and occupational experiences are quite diverse. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with Bachelor degree in Speech and Language pathology and have worked in the field as a teacher of speech improvement in the public school system. I am currently pursuing a MASTER in TESOL. I have worked in many different teaching capacities both within and outside of the public school system. I have had many positive teaching experiences with a variety of students including ESL, learning disabled and speech impaired. I spent four months in Italy teaching English to adults while expanding my own knowledge of the Italian language.
An effective tutor is one who not only has a thorough understanding of the material taught, but also one who takes the learner's personal style of learning into account. An effective tutor should act as the backbone of the learner when he or she makes mistakes, bearing in mind, however, not to spoon feed the information to the learner, but rather, encourage the learner to think and reason on his or her own. This skill is invaluable in learning how to deal with any challenge.
