This past summer, I worked with a 5-year-old autistic boy and was his one on one at Camp, as well as his nanny after camp. This was probably one of the best experiences I've had being a nanny, and we really developed quite the bond. He was able to learn who I was and I quickly learned him and how to act around him. It's remarkable the attachment we both developed for each other after just one summer (I continue to be his babysitter throughout the school year when I'm able to). At Camp, we were in a cabin with other special needs children as well so we all helped each other out, which allowed me to get plenty of experience with the other children. Brandon went on vacation for two weeks, but I still wanted to work at Camp - I couldn't go two weeks away from this place! I was assigned to a new friend, J, who is 14 and has cerebral Palsy. He was nonverbal, bound to a wheelchair and needed a one on one to help dress him, feed him, etc. Both of these experiences showed me the desire I have to try and help make a difference in the lives of children and others, and further excited me for my future career as an occupational therapist. I fell in love with this job and the experiences that came along with it, and it helped motivate me to explore this career path option in my future.
