I have worked with children with special needs for many years. As a nurse, I cared for many medically fragile children both in a facility and in their homes. I have cared for children with illnesses such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, birth defects, complications due to accidents, etc. I have provided tracheotomy care, g-tube and j-tube feedings, respiratory physical therapy, etc. As a teacher, I have worked with children who had Autism, PDD, learning disabilities, behavioral issues and mental retardation. My sister is a physician who also has an Autistic daughter and treats Autistic patients in her practice using the biomedical approach. Learning about Autism and it's treatment and the hope of recovery has become a passion for me due to witnessing first hand the pain and suffering, and more powerfully, the love and endurance of my sister and my beautiful niece.
