Before college, I had little experience with people with special needs. I had babysat for a family with a daughter with down's syndrome, but my exposure was limited. Upon getting to college, I started my experience in the classroom because I am an education major. The classroom that I was in had a few children with special needs, ranging from physical disabilities to developmental disabilities. I got to spend a lot of time helping them. I really enjoyed it. I decided that working with people with special needs was something I really wanted to do. I decided to broaden my experience and I worked at a special needs camp in Central Illinois that is run by the organization Easter Seals. I had the opportunity to work with children and adults that had a broad range of disabilities, some severe and some mild. I worked with people that had physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries. It was here that I realized that this was something I really wanted to do for the rest of my life. The people I worked with were so genuine, loving, and caring. They never took anything for granted and they saw each moment as precious. I decided after that summer that after graduation from college, I would get my master's in special education so I can continue what I love to do.
