About who needs care: My husband has liver cirrhosis and is having increasingly frequent episodes of hepatic encephalopathy. WHen they are serious, I take him to the ER. He also has parkinsonism, probably stemming from the cirrhosis. He wears a cardiac pacemaker as well, but that is not problematic in any way. My husband spends every day reading fiction or watching movies, but he tends to fall asleep throughout the day when he sits in a chair. He has no interest in walking or exercising, playing games or practicing hobbies. My husband completed medical school and is a very bright and highly educated man, but his illness has destroyed his reasoning skills and verbal fluency. About the care needs: Since my husband is shy and not very communicative, someone quiet but very reliable and knowledgeable in dealing with cirrhotic patients. Services needed include: feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
