About who needs care: My father-in-law recently turned 77 years old. He was admitted to the emergency room 2 weeks ago due to low blood sugar and continues to struggle with managing his diabetes. His sleep schedule has become irregular. He tends to sleep most of the day and stay awake throughout the night. As a result, he sometimes forgets to take his medication on time. He has also become increasingly withdrawn. Due to incontinence, he refuses to leave the house except for medical appointments. He rarely speaks with family or friends on the phone and spends most of his time watching YouTube. My husband visits him every evening to make sure he has some human interaction, as he currently has very little social engagement. My father-in-law is also experiencing significant vision loss and is nearly blind in one eye. These challenges have made it difficult for him to care for himself consistently and safely. In addition, he speaks English but has an African accent, so its important that his caregiver can understand him clearly and communicate patiently. Otherwise, he can become easily frustrated, which affects his willingness to accept help. My husband and I both work full-time and are expecting our first child, so it has become increasingly difficult to provide the level of daily support he needs. We are seeking a home health aide for a few hours Monday through Friday to: -Help make sure he is awake by noon -Assist with preparing his first meal of the day -Provide companionship and conversation -Perform light housekeeping (primarily the kitchen and bathroom) We hope to find someone who is patient, understanding, and dependable, someone who can connect with him, communicate effectively, and help improve his daily routine and overall quality of life. About the care needs: He would get along with someone who is positive and easy-going. He is very slow and steady and moves at his own pace. A high-energy, fast talking and fast moving caretaker probably wouldnt be a good fit. He speaks English, but has an African accent. It is very important that his caretaker can understand him, is patient, and willing to listen. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
