I have some previous experience in working with people with disabilities, that I gained as a volunteer in the Hospice for Children with Terminal Diseases in Lublin, Poland, where I come from. There, my duties included talking, playing and helping the children during their everyday activities, such as dressing up, washing, eating and going to bed, organizing fund risings and festivals on benefit of the Hospice. Moreover, I was responsible for some administrative and paper work. I believe I gained a lot through this experience. I learnt how to show my support, respect and compassion to those I worked with, at the same time making them feel comfortable and secure around me. I developed an exceptional bond with some of the children, who had a real friend in me during their last months.
I had a direct contact with the environment of the Care Home when visiting and taking care of my 80 years old aunt who suffers from advanced Alzheimer’s. I experienced how demanding it is to emotionally and physically devote oneself to help a person with both physical and mental impairments. I admired the patience and understanding of the nurses who worked there, what inspired me to become such a person in the future myself.
