Part-time Companionship For Seniors With Dementia Or Alzheimer's
For the past year I have worked part-time with a 93-year-old woman who has Alzheimer's. I have given her companionship and mental stimulation, such as: taking her out for lunch or ice cream, and trips to nearby parks, working on puzzles, coloring, drawing, card making, giving hand massage, having conversation about her experiences. I have spoken with the family about her symptoms and how this impacts her functioning, and have provided them with websites which list Alzheimer's activities for mental stimulation. I made her lunch and sometimes supper.
I have loved working with this client who has needed companionship. It allowed me to encourage and care for someone in need of help. I was able to use my background, in special needs, to interact with this senior, as well as her family. In return I found that I was stimulated, comforted, and felt good about what I was doing for my client. My work helped her remain at home by calming her and giving her company.
