Hi, I have 12 years experience in Business/Administration. I was looking for a career change that would work as I transition to get my master's degree in social work. My goal is to get a degree in social work with an emphasis in music and art therapy to utilize with children in under-served communities.

Within the past 3 years, I've had the honor of working with a number of families with kiddos of different age ranges and personalities in a nanny share. Ages, newborn - 12. Families have transitioned out for a variety of reasons. e. g. relocation, expanding families, job transitions. Currently, I'm looking to add a kiddo to an existing family I'm working with. I currently watch a 2. 5 toddler on Monday - Wednesday - Fridays.
My caregiver "style" is hands on experience. I'm very engaged with the children from the moment I arrive until I leave. I teach the kiddos from the start the "DIY" (Do-It-Yourself) mentality. I sit with them and teach them how to crack an egg, how to open the milk carton, how to climb the rock wall at the playground. This also comes with "eyes always on the ball" adult supervision. My personality fits extremely well as being a nanny. I'm very laid-back, patient, organized, reliable and flexible. I feel, for me, these are skills necessary in life and especially with children. I'm know as a bit silly and goofy in my interaction with the kiddos.
Besides learning adventures throughout the city, trips to museums, libraries, use of public transportation when applicable, I'm also engaged in continuing to teach them things throughout the day, through crafts. Each kiddo tends to go through certain phases, the buckle phase, the water fountain phase, the "No", "I want to do it myself" and "Why" phase. Honestly, those last 3 tend to stick around forever. (insert joke). I know what to expect and can adapt to transitions. I do not shy away from challenging tasks & always look for ways to broaden my knowledge & expertise (e. g. attending class for baby sign language).
On a more personal level, I am passionate about the general concept of art, design, music & information gathering (i. e., reading). When working with children, I enjoy making gadgets as opposed to purchasing them. DIY items we've made include: sock puppets, friendship bracelets, paper beads for jewelry, flowers, bookmarks, animals for a zoo, "fancy" pens, costumes, postcards, constellations, solar systems, dinosaurs, airplanes, superhero masks, submarines, newspapers, seek-n-finds, connect the dots, time machine and spy club kits. With younger children, I realize developmental cognition is important. I encourage crafts that practice the alphabet, shapes colors and numbers. I enjoy boosting the imagination of a child when we're playing, whether we're pretending to be pirates or princesses. I'm experienced in interactive story time and singing for nap/bed time (warning: vocal range is limited). Assisting with chores, errands and homework come natural to me as I enjoy teaching and keep a tidy home.
Other experience includes a younger sister. I've utilized my experience as a middle child, when working with children/siblings, to help them facilitate understanding and compromise. Since children have different temperaments, I work with each child to adjust my style to their personal needs. I moved to Baltimore 6 years ago from the Mid-west. I've I surrounded myself with friends from different backgrounds. In my spare time, I am active in the community. Whether it is volunteering, a previous stint as organizer of an interactive meet-up group linking members of the community with social events in Baltimore, or planting a garden.
Thank you for the consideration. I look forward to hearing from you for an interview.
