About who needs care: Early stage dementia/mild cognitive impairment, and AFib are the main underlying conditions. Interests are going outfor lunch, sightseeing, family, current events, good conversation. Caretaker should give pt her AM med by 8:30A, wake pt up and assist pt with showering and getting dressed, and prepare breakfast for pt to have after wake up. Then caregiver can take pt on outings, to appointments, sightseeing, and/or have a nice, stimulating conversation with her at home. Lunch should also be prepared and offered. Pt will then likely want to talk, read magazines, watch TV, or rest in bed. PM shift will take over at 4P.
About the care needs: A meticulously clean, well-groomed, caring, funny and engaging personality is the best fit. Also someone with the ability to successfully encourage Pt to wake up and begin the day is needed and ideal. The caregiver must have a car, be a good and safe driver, and be willing to transport Pt to appointments and outings.
The ideal candidate should have a medical background, preferably as a MA, CRNA, LPN, RN or BSN is ideal; also having BLS and ACLS certification would be perfect. They must understand dementia and the disease progression to spot potential issues or worsening of condition, and know how to avoid stressing or triggering the Pt (re-direction, listening, compassion, validation, and re-suggestion, etc). Candidate should also be able to help with mobility issues. Absolutely must work well with a team.
The perfect candidate should be interested in family, current events, an excellent conversationalist, and have an exciting and energetic personality.
