Now, new data shows working parents are also feeling the strain. Last month, the number of parents missing work to care for their kids reached an all-time high, and many of them are scrambling to make up for lost pay, lost hours and to help their kids stay well.<\/p><p>More than 100,000 adults missed work to care for their kids in October, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.bls.gov\/timeseries\/LNU02096055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest report<\/a> from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/11\/15\/work-absences-childcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a> reports that number is higher than the number of adults who missed work at the height of the pandemic.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As flu, RSV and covid collide, a record 100,000 Americans missed work last month because of child-care problems, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/abhabhattarai?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@abhabhattarai<\/a> reports.<br><br>That&rsquo;s bigger than the height of the pandemic! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FPAh8ZJ4g1\">https:\/\/t.co\/FPAh8ZJ4g1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/byWGwMvDLb\">pic.twitter.com\/byWGwMvDLb<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Fenit Nirappil (@FenitN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FenitN\/status\/1592517934114803717?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 15, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-working-parents-are-stretched-too-thin\">Working parents are stretched too thin<\/h2><p>Sick kids, a lingering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2022\/9\/27\/23356278\/the-pandemic-child-care-inflation-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">child care shortage<\/a> and lack of access to paid leave and other pro-parent policies has created a perfect storm for parents. Dozens of moms and dads have taken to Twitter to voice their concerns about their jobs and how best to care for their kids amidst a growing crisis of illness.<\/p><p>Citing the impossible choices many parents are being forced to make, one mom asks, &ldquo;What do other single moms do when their kids are sick and can&rsquo;t go to daycare? While health experts advise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/school\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keeping kids home<\/a> when they&rsquo;re sick to prevent the spread of the illness, the reality is that many families simply can&rsquo;t do that. More than 94% of the country&rsquo;s highest paid workers have access to paid sick leave,&nbsp;but only 57%&nbsp;of low earning workers can say the same, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/ebs2.t06.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">government data<\/a>.<\/p><p>Historically, it&rsquo;s also true that absences and closures heavily impact working mothers. In 2021, 47% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/womens-health-policy\/issue-brief\/women-work-and-family-during-covid-19-findings-from-the-kff-womens-health-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working moms<\/a> said they had to take unpaid sick leave to care for their kids during pandemic-related day care and school closures. This includes 60% of lower-income mothers and 75% of moms who work part-time. <\/p><p>Cold and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/spotlights\/2022-2023\/early-flu-activity.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flu season<\/a> typically lasts through the winter, and it&rsquo;s clear that respiratory viruses will continue to plague kids and parents for at least the next several weeks. With hundreds of thousands of parents out of work, families may also be dealing with lost wages and diminished help with the added burdens of child care.
