The U.S. is averaging more than 100,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_dailytrendscases\">new COVID-19 cases<\/a> per day. As a result, more than a dozen states have implemented new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/17\/health\/us-coronavirus-tuesday\/index.html\">mask mandates<\/a>, limits on gatherings and curfews to try to stop the spread of the virus. Now, many states are moving once more to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2020\/11\/14\/schools-start-closing-or-delay-reopening-covid-19-cases-jump-across-country\/\">close schools<\/a>, but parents are starting to wonder if keeping kids out of the classroom is really the best option.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/\">Michigan<\/a>, high schools have closed for at least three weeks. In places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvu.com\/news\/school-districts-pause-reopening-plans-as-california-pumps-brakes\">California<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html\">Washington<\/a>, plans to reopen schools that have been closed most of the year are being put on hold. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/18\/nyregion\/nyc-schools-covid.html\">New York City<\/a>, the entire public school system is closing as of Thursday, November 19 after having been open for&nbsp;in-person instruction for just under eight weeks.<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\"><b>What lawmakers, parents and educators are saying<\/b><\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.care.com\/c\/stories\/17022\/early-data-from-open-schools\/\">preliminary data<\/a> shows kids in school don&rsquo;t seem to be the driving force behind COVID-19 outbreaks, many parents are demanding to know why schools are being closed before other risky places, like bars, restaurants and hotels. &ldquo;Our strategy is completely backwards,&rdquo; one person writes in a tweet to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. &ldquo;Schools should be the LAST thing to close and non-essential businesses like restaurants, bars and gyms should be the first to close. In Illinois, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/coronavirus\/ct-covid-19-illinois-teachers-union-close-schools-20201116-bbt6svkkvbcbnjpxxicccme7xy-story.html\">teachers union<\/a> is calling for school shutdowns as COVID-19 cases rise, and unions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2020\/11\/17\/nebraska-teachers-union-sounds-the-alarm-warns-of-shutdowns-amid-covid-19-surge\/\">Nebraska<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/education\/2020\/09\/30\/wisconsin-teachers-unions-ask-again-all-schools-go-virtual\/5869878002\/\">Wisconsin<\/a> and elsewhere are expressing concerns about the growing threat school employees face. While schools may not be a leading cause of infections, the risk of being exposed to COVID-19 at school still exists. One independent <a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/fb52d598982f41faac714b5ebe32e7d1?data_id=dataSource_1-USA_COVID19_School_Monitor_Case_Reports_251%3A2546\">COVID-19 tracker<\/a> reports more than 43,000 cases of the virus among school staff members this year.<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\"><b>What research shows&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">Bars, gyms and hotels have the potential to be major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-superspreader-events-venues-include-restaurants-gyms-hotels\/\">contributing factors<\/a> to COVID-19 spread, while research compiled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/risk-comms-updates\/update39-covid-and-schools.pdf?sfvrsn=320db233_2\">World Health Organization<\/a> shows COVID-19 transmission in schools has remained low. Most students who get sick are acquiring infections at home, rather than in class. Children and adolescents also account for only 8% of COVID-19 cases globally, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-020-0962-9\">children under 10<\/a> are the least likely to get or transmit the virus. While many are worried about the adults who interact with kids at school and day care, a Pediatrics study of 57,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2020\/10\/16\/peds.2020-031971.full.pdf\">childcare providers<\/a> finds their risk of contracting COVID-19 is no higher than that of other adults in their communities.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">At the same time, prolonged school closures may have serious repercussions for kids. Researchers predict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/public-and-social-sector\/our-insights\/covid-19-and-student-learning-in-the-united-states-the-hurt-could-last-a-lifetime\">learning loss<\/a> caused by school closures and prolonged distance learning could widen achievement gaps between Black, Hispanic, low-income and white students by as much as 15-20%. They also predict the high school drop-out rate could increase in 2020.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Additionally, many students rely on schools for more than just learning. Currently, one in three American families are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/child-hunger-1-in-3-families-with-kids-dont-have-enough-food\/\">food insecure<\/a>, and when schools close, students risk losing access to free or reduced cost meals provided by those schools. School closures can also hinder parents&rsquo; abilities to work, or to look for work if they&rsquo;re one of the more than 11 million people in the U.S. who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/empsit.pdf\">unemployed<\/a>.<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\"><b>The takeaway<\/b><\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">The debate over schools is one of many examples of how the U.S. is struggling with its response to COVID-19. Without federal mandates in place, states, counties and individual school districts are left to make hard choices on their own, and there is no single solution that&rsquo;s right for every teacher and family. There is hope that a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pfizer-covid-19-shot-95-percent-9d71455cfce0ff047dee4df873ec1023\">COVID-19 vaccine<\/a> is on the way in 2021. Until then, wearing masks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html\">social distancing<\/a> and avoiding all non-essential outings remain the best possible ways to protect students and school workers, whether they&rsquo;re at home or in the classroom.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COVID-19 cases are surging in the U.S., and leaders are scrambling to fight back.
