When you read your pets dry food bag you are viewing it in the form of a dry matter basis<\/strong> (otherwise known as a moisture free food analysis). This snapshot of your pet’s food is commonly known as the guaranteed analysis<\/strong>, and shows you the protein, fat, fiber, and moisture content of your pet’s food. So how do you find the dry matter basis for your pet’s canned food? There is a simple equation to subtract the water content from the canned food you are trying to analyze, here’s how:<\/p>

Use the information found on your food cans guaranteed analysis to complete this equation:<\/p>

Dry Matter protein content = (protein \/ (moisture -100) ) x 100<\/strong><\/p>

Here’s an example: my cat’s wellness can food reads that it has 8 % protein and 82 % moisture content. To find the dry matter protein percentage of Terra’s food I need to subtract the moisture content on the label from 100, and form the following equation:<\/p>

 ( 8 \/ 18 ) x 100 = 44.4% dry matter protein content<\/p>

This means that if my cat’s food were a dry kibble it would actually contain 44.4% protein vs. the 8% listed on the label. That’s a big difference! Try this at home with your pet’s food canned food and compare it to their dry kibble, what kind of differences can you find??<\/p>
