The former is a child care program that &ldquo;serves children from infancy through toddlerhood and into the later preschool years,&ldquo; explains Elizabeth Fraley, a former early elementary program director in Los Angeles and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kinderready.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kinder Ready<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p><p>By comparison, after-school programs, which are geared towards school-aged kids, &ldquo;provide a transitional space for children with working parents,&rdquo; Fraley continues. &ldquo;These programs typically offer time for homework, as well as play-based games, board games, fitness activities and collaborative projects with similarly aged peers.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p><p>From cost to hours of operation and more, here&rsquo;s everything parents need to know about daycare vs. after-school programs.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-custom-dynamic-list key-takeaways-block\"><h3>Key takeaways<\/h3><div class=\"key-takeaways-container\"><ul><li>Daycare serves infants through preschool-aged children and focuses heavily on play-based learning, social-emotional development, and school readiness in a full-day, year-round setting. Both options support working families, but they differ in structure, developmental focus, and daily rhythm.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-daycare\" data-toc-id=\"05f9fe2a\">What is daycare?<\/h2><p>Daycare, which typically serves infants through children around age 5, is a &ldquo;place where children begin to develop social and emotional awareness through sharing, negotiating and learning empathy,&rdquo; explains Fraley.<\/p><p>That being said, &ldquo;not every daycare center provides infant care,&rdquo; notes Lisa Martinez, owner and operator of <a href=\"https:\/\/watchfuleyedaycare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watchful Eye Daycare Centers<\/a> in Maryland. &ldquo;It depends on the qualifications.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p><p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.care.com\/c\/guides\/finding-day-care-guide\/\">daycare<\/a> values play as a core part of development, children are given the &ldquo;flexibility and freedom to explore, create and engage with their peers,&rdquo; notes Fraley. Daycare can also play a big part in learning how to socialize and interact with others through both structured and unstructured activities.<\/p><p>Compared to heavily-structured settings, though, Fraley explains that &ldquo;daycare places greater emphasis on child-directed play rather than teacher-led instruction.&rdquo;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-focus-and-structure-of-daycare\" data-toc-id=\"ccb56785\">Focus and structure of daycare<\/h2><p>The overall focus of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.care.com\/c\/8-signs-of-a-bad-day-care-center\/\">daycare<\/a> is to support social and emotional development and create a foundation for school readiness, according to Fraley. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s also a space for children to explore who they are, discover what excites them and begin to understand the unique traits and behaviors that make them special,&rdquo; she adds.<\/p><p>Kids learn in daycare, but in a play-based format, as opposed to the more rigid setup of school.&nbsp;<\/p><p>&ldquo;The structure of daycare is age-based learning, social-emotional growth, play and routine,&rdquo; says Martinez, who notes that, in daycare, children should be &ldquo;free to explore in a safe, friendly and nurturing environment.&rdquo;<\/p><p>Here&rsquo;s what a typical day in daycare may look like, per Fraley:<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-morning-meeting-circle-time-nbsp\">Morning meeting\/circle time&nbsp;<\/h3><p>This is where children gather in front of their instructor to practice calendar skills like the days of the week, months of the year, weather and counting (sometimes through song!).&nbsp;<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enriching-educational-activities\">Enriching, educational activities<\/h3><p>After morning circle time, children explore a variety of classroom centers. Here are a few most daycare centers include:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A book nook, which serves as a designated cozy space for reading.<\/li><li>Blocks.<\/li><li>Dramatic play.<\/li><li>Music.<\/li><li>Writing and drawing.<\/li><\/ul><p>Kids in daycare also typically have a morning snack, lunch, and depending on the age and how long they&rsquo;re there, nap or quiet time, as well as an afternoon snack.&nbsp;<\/p><p>It&rsquo;s also worth noting that daycare hours vary by location. These can include flu, coxsackie and lice, Fraley notes.&nbsp;<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-limited-focus-on-individual-academics-nbsp\">Limited focus on individual academics&nbsp;<\/h3><p>&ldquo;By age 3, some children may benefit from more personalized educational support, tailored to their interests and developmental needs,&rdquo; notes Fraley. This may look like enrichment programs for kids who &ldquo;need more,&rdquo; or tutoring programs, which, Fraley notes, not all daycares provide.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-after-school-programs\" data-toc-id=\"3b61cb03\">What are after-school programs?<\/h2><p>As the name suggests, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.care.com\/c\/10-options-for-after-school-child-care\/\">after-school programs<\/a> are for kids who are already attending school. &ldquo;[After-school programs] take place during the hours between when the school day ends and when the work day ends,&rdquo; explains Rebecca Carlin, executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinyouthcompany.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Youth Company<\/a>, who adds that the industry term is &ldquo;out-of-school time programs.&rdquo; Depending on the school district, she notes, after-school programs run from around 2:30-6 p.m.<\/p><p>&ldquo;These programs provide safe, fun, enriching places for children to be while their parents or guardians are at work,&rdquo; she notes. Typically, transportation is provided from school to the after-school program, if it takes place at a different location.&nbsp;<\/p><p>&ldquo;Our after-school programs operate in school buildings,&rdquo; Carlin notes. &ldquo;Children walk from their classrooms to rooms like the cafeteria or gym where after school programs take place.&rdquo;<\/p><p>The majority of after-school programs are for elementary-aged children, Fraley notes, adding that &ldquo;some are designed for middle schoolers (ages 11&ndash;14), and some also offer options for high school students (ages 14&ndash;18).&rdquo;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-focus-and-structure-and-after-school-programs\" data-toc-id=\"2d19eb51\">Focus and structure and after-school programs<\/h2><p>The primary focus of after-school programs, Carlin notes, is to provide safe, fun, enriching spaces for children to go during the hours between when school ends and when the work day ends.<\/p><p>Most non-specialized after-school programs follow a similar format. &ldquo;They typically start with a snack, include time for active play outside, a guided project and plenty of opportunities for children to decompress after a day of school or do homework,&rdquo; Carlin notes.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Carlin also adds that there&rsquo;s a &ldquo;strong focus on social engagement with staff and peers&rdquo; in after-school programs.&nbsp;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits-and-drawbacks-of-after-school-programs\" data-toc-id=\"a85e8a66\">Benefits and drawbacks of after-school programs<\/h2><p>The pros of after-school programs for kids include:<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-safe-supervised-space-nbsp\">A safe, supervised space&nbsp;<\/h3><p>Staff at after-school programs are trained to keep kids safe and engaged. While much less formal than school, after-school programs can be thought of as an extension of the school day, where kids are looked after by responsible adults.&nbsp;<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-homework-help-and-potential-enrichment-activities-nbsp\">Homework help and potential enrichment activities&nbsp;<\/h3><p>Some after-school programs, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/childcenterny.org\/after-school-enrichment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Child Center of New York<\/a>, offer bonus options (for an additional fee) such as sports lessons or STEM classes.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-socialization-nbsp-0\">Socialization&nbsp;<\/h3><p>Unlike going home with a nanny or babysitter (which has their own benefits!), kids get to hang out with peers in both their grade, as well as grades above or below.<\/p><p>&ldquo;After-school programs can also be a valuable resource for dual-working or single-parent families, offering greater flexibility to manage work commitments, pursue career opportunities and potentially increase household income,&rdquo; notes Fraley.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Drawbacks include:<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cost-nbsp\">Cost<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3><p>After-school program rates vary widely, based on location and offerings. <a href=\"https:\/\/wallacefoundation.org\/cost-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wallace Foundation<\/a> has an after-school program calculator that allows families to plug in different information to get an idea of cost.&nbsp;<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hectic-schedules-nbsp\">Hectic schedules&nbsp;<\/h3><p>&ldquo;When kids attend after-school programs, it reduces the time parents and kids spend together in the afternoon and in the evening,&rdquo; Fraley notes. &ldquo;This can make it harder [for parents] to maintain a cohesive work-life balance, as opportunities for family connection during the week may be limited.&rdquo;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-main-difference-between-daycare-and-after-school-programs\" data-toc-id=\"0bd02905\">The main difference between daycare and after-school programs<\/h2><p>In addition to daycare serving infants through children aged 5, these child care programs run all day, with activities geared towards younger children. After-school programs typically begin at around 2:30 p.m., and are tailored to kids in elementary, middle and even high school.<\/p><p>&ldquo;After-school programs are structured around school schedules while daycare provides full-day care, focusing on infant and toddlers,&rdquo; notes Carlin. In other words, daycare and after-school programs are tailored to two very different age groups.
