How to Make an Olympic Swimmer Costume

Sara Eberle
Sept. 28, 2012

As part of the Care.com Halloween costume series, here's how to turn your child into a mini-Michael Phelps.

The 2016 Olympics may be over, but your child can relive all of the athletic glory with this champion swimmer costume. They could wear a bathing suit or shorts with this outfit, but it might be a little too cold out. Sweats are a good compromise.

Materials:

  • Black bathing cap
  • Small American flag decal or sticker
  • Goggles
  • Flip-flops
  • Stopwatch
  • Cardboard
  • Purple ribbon
  • Gold spray paint
  • Sweatshirt
  • Yoga or sweatpants

Step 1: Apply American flag decal to side of black bathing cap -- Go USA!

Step 2: Cut cardboard into a few medal-size circles. Cover both sides of the circles in spray paint and let dry. Pierce a small hole in the top of each circle and run ribbon through. Tie the ends of each ribbon into a knot.

Step 3: Put on bathing cap, goggles, flip flops, medals, shirt and pants.

Step 4: Grab the stopwatch and go!
