Caution; be sure the child is at an age/development level that equals the needed "ability to reason". I have observed some adults expecting children to reason beyond their capability, no matter how smart they may be, reasoning skills only come by degrees and experience.

Tara, that's just common knowledge reinforcement skills, not a tactic to create an environment in which the child actually WANTS to do as he or she is told.

How about "I need you to sit quietly now. " Then validate. "I'm proud of you for making the smart choice." if child will not listen, then give a consequence and follow through.

Sheri, Sitting still can be a big boy skill, that one seam to work too.
