As a loved one ages, there often comes a time when they are no longer able to live completely independently. At this juncture, there are a few decisions that must be explored, most importantly whether you would prefer your elderly family member to move into a nursing facility or to have them receive similar care and monitoring in their home. For some families nursing homes are not the answer, this is why so many families choose to look into home care.
What is Home Care?
Home Careis an alternative care option to nursing home and assisted living facilities. There are two types of home care - skilled medical home care and non-medical home care. Home care often allows a senior to feel more independent, but still allows them to receive the care they need.
Many seniors just need a little extra help with the activities of daily living which include bathing or dressing or even cooking and running errands. For these seniors, non-medical home care is the best option as a care provider will come to their home to assist with all these tasks. Other seniors need that type of assistance plus some medical help with things like wound care or injections. These seniors would do best with skilled medical home care which is provided by visiting nurses who come to the senior's home and assist them with these tasks.
