Alaska Home Care

Find caregivers and in-home aides to help your loved one in Alaska.

Alaska - Home Care

It's a tough moment when we realize that our aging loved ones require daily help to fulfill even the most basic needs. Because many seniors prefer to stay in their homes, tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and doing laundry become more challenging. It's important to know what kind of support systems are out there for seniors who wish to remain at home and "age in place."

Home Care

Non-medical home care and skilled medical home care (or nursing care) are two different things. With non-medical home care, a home care aide can assist seniors with personal care duties; with housekeeping duties, and by reminding them to take their medication. It's important to note this distinction: home care aides are not legally able to administer the medication; a nursing assistant only has that authority. If your loved one needs help taking medication or needs other medical assistance (with injections, for example) then skilled medical home care, administered by visiting nurses, is the best option for them. Skilled medical care offers high-level medical care right at home. For more information on how to safely age at home, read our Care.com article on In-Home Care vs. Nursing Home Care.

Alaska Resources

Alaska's Agency on Aging provide assistance with senior benefit programs, Social Security, Medicare, and eligibility for low-income senior programs including home and community services (some states will provide part-time caregiving in the home through their home and community services program). Other services also include transportation, home-delivered meals, prescription drug programs, healthy aging programs, case management, senior activities, and support groups. For more information on this program, look for an Agency on Aging in your area.
