The Best Baby Bouncer for Your Infant

These 6 baby bouncers will soothe and entertain your little one so you can grab that well-deserved shower.

Baby bouncers keep your little one comfy and occupied while you eat dinner or use the restroom. They're sanity savers and a must-have item for many new parents. But what should you look for when choosing the best baby bouncer for your child? There are so many options that it can be hard to decide.

According to Ingrid Kellaghan, a parenting expert and founder of Cambridge Nanny Group in Chicago, not all baby bouncers are built to the same standard. "You want to make sure the bouncer actually bounces," she says. "It seems obvious, but many bouncers don't have a good bouncing ability, so be sure to check the mechanism." You should also look for well-made safety straps, a seat that reclines comfortably and safely and a removable cover so you can easily clean up messes. All the extra bells and whistles, like vibration, lights, music and iPod plugins, are nice to have, but you don't need them. "Less is more," says Emma Jenner, a child development and behavioral specialist and author of "Keep Calm and Parent On." "All the flashing lights and music can be too much stimulation for babies."

When it comes to using your baby bouncer, moderation is key. "Studies on child development have shown that anything that confines babies restricts their development," says Jenner. Aim to keep baby in the bouncer for twenty minutes at a time, maximum.

With that in mind, here are some of the best bouncers currently on the market.

  1. Bright Starts Up, Up & Away Bouncer
    Price range: $25 to $30

Short on fancy features, the Bright Starts Up, Up & Away Bouncer covers all the necessities and really gives you some bang for your buck. The contoured seat and three-point harness keep your baby safe while colorful animal toys keep her engaged. You can also remove the toy bar as needed and turn on soothing, gentle vibrations. It's available in a safari animal-themed print.

  2. Fisher-Price Comfort Curve Bouncer
    Price range: $35 to $50

The Fisher-Price Comfort Curve Bouncer gently bounces with your baby and has vibrations to help soothe your little one. The removable toy bar includes an adorable raccoon and baby deer that encourage him to play. Its sleek, contemporary design and cake-pop print is appealing to new-age parents, but the price really makes it a winner.

  3. Tiny Love Gymini Bouncer
    Price range: $40 to $60

The Tiny Love Gymini Bouncer features adjustable bars that allow you to maneuver toys directly over your baby or slightly to the side. Some of these toys have motion sensors that turn on music and lights, but you can disable these as desired. Its ergonomic seat has two reclining positions for different ages so the bouncer can grow with your child. It's available in a vibrant yellow and blue pattern or a pink princess theme.

  4. Baby Bjorn Bouncer Balance Soft
    Price range: $130 to $150

With its sleek and stylish design, durable frame and bouncy chair, the Baby Bjorn Bouncer Balance Soft is one of the best baby bouncer products on the market. The seat's ergonomics are unbeatable. "It's also the only one on the market with three reclining settings," says Jenner. The entire bouncer folds completely flat for traveling or storage and is available in dark gray, khaki and brown. Cloth options include cotton, organic cotton and mesh.

  5. BabyHome Wave Wooden Rocker
    Price range: $160 to $180

The BabyHome Wave Wooden Rocker takes contemporary design to a whole new level. Its front-to-back rocking motion really stimulates your baby's senses. The seat has two different positions and includes a stationary setting. "It's just a really well-made product," says Kellaghan. It comes in light gray, dark gray or red with a white or wooden finish.

  6. 4moms mamaRoo
    Prince range: $200 to $270

The 4moms mamaRoo is the pinnacle of baby bouncers. It has five unique simulated motions, including car ride, tree swing, rock-a-bye, ocean floating and kangaroo bounce. There's also built-in music, including nature sounds and white noise, but you can attach your iPod for some extra tunes. Its seat is highly adjustable to support your little one. This bouncer is sleek and unique, and comes in a variety of colors and patterns.
