What should I pack for my au pair stay?

As going abroad for a year is a really big deal, it can be overwhelming trying to think about everything you need for the journey and stay. To help out, we’ve put together a useful au pair packing list. For hand luggage, we recommend taking a backpack as it can be used abroad for sports activities and excursions. So, let’s get packed!

What should go in the hand luggage

  • Passport
  • Flight ticket, visa if applicable, other travel documents
  • Au pair contract
  • Proof of insurance, emergency numbers, host family address
  • Copies of all important documents: passport, medical certificates, driver’s license, qualifications, etc.
  • Mobile phone, charger
  • Cash (check currency), credit/laser card
  • Camera/video camera
  • Laptop/tablet, charger
  • Dictionary
  • Vital medications
  • Neck pillow
  • Magazine or book

What should go in the suitcase

  • Clothing: summer & winter clothes, suitable childcare work clothes, sportswear, 1-2 dress outfits for special occasions
