How to add and subtract at the farmers market

The best place to find fresh fruits and vegetables is your local farmers market. They can’t be beat for quality and freshness. Usually you can find one on Saturday or Sunday morning in a local parking lot.

Instead of just walking around and buying a few things we’re going to let the kids do the shopping today. It’s a great way to help the kids brush up on their math skills and learn about what goes into the food that they eat. Give them the list of and don’t forget to write down how much of each item you’ll need. Don’t give them any hints. Just hand over the list and follow along.

Here’s our list for some ideas:

  • 1 onion
  • Bunch of fresh parsley
  • 1 spaghetti squash
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 ½ pounds fresh peaches
  • ¾ pound plums
  • 1 pound of apples
  • 5 ears of corn
  • 3/4 pound of organic grass fed ground beef

See if they can get everything on the list without any assistance. Don’t forget to tell them what makes the fruit ripe or over ripe. There are usually scales for the customers to use and encourage the kids to weigh out the items themselves. It’s a great way to give them a math refresher. Perfect timing right before school starts.
