Nothing says family time like an ice cream cone -- and in the Las Vegas heat, cooling yourself off is a must. Vegas is known for its bars and fine dining options, but casual eateries like ice cream shops are plentiful.

Don’t be fooled by the name! Sprinkles Cupcakes is not a one-trick pony. You may be familiar with this company, as there are several locations scattered around the nation. While Sprinkles serves up some world-class cupcakes, this gem on the Las Vegas Strip has ice cream flavors galore. Whether you’re craving a brownie sundae, a Sprinkles Sandwich, a shake, or simply an ice cream cone (choices: normal waffle cone and a red velvet waffle cone), Sprinkles has you covered. In case you don’t want your kids bouncing off the walls from a sugar high, order them a kid’s scoop and choose between a unique variety of unique flavors like Cap’n Crunch, coconut fudge almond, pumpkin -- or something more classic, like rocky road.

Located just off the Strip, in walking distance of the Stratosphere Casino Hotel & Casino, Luv-It Frozen Custard is a long-time local favorite. Don’t believe us? This funky little shop boasts a 4.5 star rating on Trip Advisor, where customers call it a fabulous “hidden jewel.” The most unique aspect of this family-owned business, which has delighted Las Vegans since 1973, is that there’s only a walk-up window and no indoor seating -- but that’s part of what people love about it! Daily selections of ice cream flavors vary, so if you remember, look up the flavors beforehand. That way, you and the kids can get an idea of what you’d like. Luv-It Frozen Custard always has the classics, like vanilla and chocolate, of course. Get a single, double, or triple scoop cone -- or maybe you’d like to try a Scotch Jimmie sundae, with butterscotch, sliced bananas, and jimmies.

Most people aren’t strangers to the name Ghirardelli. In the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, at the Linq Promenade, sits a Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop that has something delicious for everyone’s palette. Whether your kids are root beer float lovers or are craving a sundae, the menu is full of options. From personal experience, we suggest the Crissy Field… a cookie bits sundae with vanilla, cookies 'n cream ice cream, handmade hot fudge, whipped cream, Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip Cookie crumbles and two Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Caramel minis. While it may seem like a fancy option for children, it will certainly be the treat of the week. If you’re looking for something a little less heavy for yourself, the Marina -- a raspberry sorbet sundae -- is also a great option. It includes handmade dark chocolate hot fudge topped with whipped cream and an Intense Dark 72 percent Twilight Delight chocolate.

Waffelato is brand spankin’ new and located in the Downtown Container Park. The Container Park is the top location, in my opinion, for families to spend time. There are plenty of dining options, cute shops, and a massive playground for kids to explore. Waffelato is a popular new spot in the Container Park that offers an interesting twist on your typical ice cream. Your kids will love the waffle texture, and the combination of the warm made-to-order waffle with the cold ice cream is to die for. It’s a small shop, but then again everything in the Container Park is. All the shops and restaurants are located inside shipping containers, and that’s part of the unique charm. Don’t forget to stop by Waffelato during your next trip downtown!

Have you heard of shaved ice cream? Well, now’s the time to learn about it! Located just a couple minutes off the Strip, Snowflake Shavery may be one of the most unique ice cream experiences in Las Vegas, and kids absolutely love it. Shaved ice provides a light, fluffy texture, while the more traditional style of ice cream brings the creaminess you’re looking for. As the company’s website explains, "Shaved ice cream combines the satisfying, indulgent taste of ice cream with the light, refreshing texture of Hawaiian shave ice. It's creamy, yet light. Smooth, yet intense.” Generous portion sizes make this little gem in Chinatown even more attractive on a hot Las Vegas day, or just when you’re craving something refreshing. And customers agree -- Snowflake Shavery boasts an impressive 4.5 stars on Yelp.
