You've posted a care job and received a bunch of responses. You’ve read through the applications and identified the candidates that you think sound promising. Naturally, you want to learn more about them. As a Care.com member, you have a few different options for sending messages on the site. But wouldn’t it be great if there was a way for you to screen initial applicants in real-time through a call or text without having to reveal your phone number just yet?

Recently, we launched CareChat, our “click-to-chat” feature that gives you a new way to connect with prospective caregivers securely by phone. With this new feature, you’ll be able to call or text applicants directly from your phone, all while keeping your personal contact information private until you’re ready to share it.

What Is CareChat?

It’s simple. CareChat is a new feature that allows you to make calls – and send texts, if you’re using a mobile phone – to prospective caregivers during the hiring process. But instead of forcing you to reveal your phone number to every applicant, CareChat will assign you a unique, anonymous number that you can use to contact them so that you can keep your number private until you’re ready to share it. (This is the same approach that’s becoming standard on ride-sharing and apartment-sharing apps.) Additionally, you’ll be able to control which applicants can contact you. And, best of all, CareChat is easy to set up!

Once you’ve hired a caregiver, you can always opt to share your personal number directly with them.

How Do I Get Started With CareChat?

Enrolling in CareChat is easy, whether you’re a current member or new to the game. It’s just a two-step process.

Step One: Activate CareChat

There are a couple places in messaging where you can start the CareChat activation process:

  1. If you’re on a mobile device, you can tap on the phone icon in the lower left of any message thread and you’ll be prompted to set up CareChat.
  2. You’ll also have an opportunity to activate CareChat if you try to share a phone number with a prospective caregiver, or if they try to share one with you. In either case, we’ll remind you to set up CareChat instead of sharing your personal phone number.

Step Two: Verify Your Number

Your next step will be to verify the phone number you wish to use for CareChat. For this step, you can use a mobile phone number, a VoIP line, or even a landline. Obviously, texting will be available only on your mobile phone.

All you need to do is enter your phone number and hit “Confirm.”

If you’re using a mobile phone to set up CareChat, we’ll ask you to choose between receiving your verification code by phone call or text message.

If you’re using a landline or VoIP number, you just need to click on the “Call with code” button and you’ll receive your verification code by phone call.

Once you receive your verification code, type it into the spaces provided.

If you’re using a mobile phone, you’ll also need to select your “security symbol.” This symbol is an emoji that will appear at the start of all CareChat text messages that you receive, so you’ll be able to recognize them.

Be on the lookout for your emoji in your incoming text messages. You’ll know it’s a CareChat text if it’s preceded by your emoji.
