How can we remove fleas from newborn kittens?

Our cat just had 4 kittens, and my son noticed fleas on them. What can we do to safely remove them from kittens? They are only 6 days old.

Answers

Dawn dish soap, but that will not keep the fleas from coming back, or take care of any spreading they have already done in surrounding areas. Consult your vet for appropriate flea and tick protection for kittens.

Fleas will literally suck the life out of kittens, so it's very important that you get rid of the fleas. The only way you're going to do this without harming them is to flea treat the mom cat with something that is safe to use on nursing cats - get Advantage from your vet. Most over the counter flea products will kill the kittens even if you put them on mom - Advantage is safe. Also clean the bedding daily - change it and wash it in the hottest water you have, which will kill the flea eggs and fleas in the bedding. Also ask the vet about Capstar for Mom - that kills all the existing live fleas on Mom, and allows the Advantage some time to do it's work. Try searching the kittens fur daily and killing (splitting the heads from the bodies completely) the fleas as well.

There is a type of flea bath to help for kittens at that age. If you can call your local vet and they can give you some options on what to bath your kittens in.

Dawn dish soap, just the original blue kind! It actually kills fleas on contact! It is not a flea deterrent but will help to get the process started! Hope this helps.

I would recommend giving them a bath in lukewarm water. The fleas will scramble for the driest parts of the kitten at which point you can remove them manually. Make sure you also treat the mother.

Check with your local vet, since the kittens are so young. However, you can bathe them in Dawn Dish Soap in the mean time. Have tweezers at your side. When the fleas surface, pluck them out and send down the drain. Put a thick soapy lather of Dawn around the neck and ears first, as they will run fast and far to get away from the soap. Fleas hate it, but it is safe for your pet. Just get the original blue formula. Do as often as needed, and for the momma cat. Fleas cause many health issues , including heartworms.
