What should I teach a 3-year-old about fire safety?
I have a 3-year-old and I'm wondering what I should be teaching him about fire safety at this age. My uncle's house burned down when I was a kid, and since then I've always been concerned about fires!
I would use words like ouch or say it hurts when cooking or if seen plugging something in. I also would point to objects and say no, no.
A three-year-old is still young to graduate on fire safety precautions. It is your responsibility to safeguard your toddler from the danger of fire. At this age, he is still in the "stay away from fire and heat" period. Of course, you can introduce them to matches and lighters and ask them not to use them at all but... Would you trust matches to your toddler even if he took a fire 411 class? I certainly would not! https://www.google.com/search?...
I believe you should teach your son to respect fire at this time - the stove is HOT - the fire place and pit are HOT = We don't touch hot things - out of the kitchen when mom is carrying something to the sink - the water is HOT. If you have a two story window I might get estimates on escape ladders that attach to the window sill on the outside and can be opened easily. Matches should not even be within their reach. If you have to light the your grill make sure whatever is well hidden and out of reach. PMathis RN BSN MSP DC
911. Scream for help if you think there is an emergency. Explain what classifies as an emergency. 3 years old is a little young to understand the detail and complexity about fires and houses burning down, but it's not too young to teach to pick up the phone and dial 911. Knowing numbers at this age is most important.
