Help with a spouse when attending out of town meetings

Spouse has limited mobility and some health concerns, can take care of basic needs (bathroom, dressing, etc) but needs someone to check in and do some light housework (kitchen cleanup, take out the trash for trash days, pick up clutter) when I have to go out of town on business. Also needs occasional grocery shopping, and perhaps cooking a meal or two with direction.  What would I call this job and what is the best way to screen for this?

Answers

Job Title: Housekeeper, Caregiver, Grocery Shopping and Meal Preparation. Job Frequency: Occasional Description of Requirements: I am in need of a responsible light-housekeeper and caregiver for certain times I am required to travel for my business. My spouse maintains limited mobility with some health concerns. Although he/she is capable of caring for him/herself bathing, dressing and most basic tasks, I require someone to come in and assist with light housework such as kitchen cleaning, clutter cleanup and waste disposal including receptacle placement at curbside on scheduled pick up days. Additional responsibilities would include some grocery shopping, as well as meal preparation under direction. Verifiable references are mandatory.

Hey there! What you are asking for is a companion. In the write up you will just want to let your potential caregivers know the details of what is expected (brief visits, light housekeeping, occasional meal prep, errands, etc.) and make it clear what is not expected (toileting, dressing, administering medications, etc.) You can perform a background check online for a fee, or for free if you sign up for a trial period, do the check, and then cancel your membership. If you are shopping for your candidates on care.com the site announces which caregivers have already submitted to a background check. Of course you want someone who isn't a felon and has no record of child or elderly abuse/neglect, certainly no domestic violence. Beyond that you probably want to have the person meet your husband and see how the two of them connect. I hope some of that helps answer your question.

I think we can call this service work a housewife. This can be traced through photos sent to the lady of the house and tickets or notes of what was done and how much was spent on the purchase orders in general. A shopping list with which the family is accustomed to eating and buying would also help the person doing the job. The cleaning of the house and the care of the spouse are in the responsibility of the helper if she is a person of confidence will do everything in the best way.

That's an excellent question, as it would be more of an In-home care position with housekeeping responsibilities. Care.com does not exactly have a category for this, unless your wife is a senior. I think listing it under Housekeeping is your best choice. Rebecca

This job would be considered a caretaker position. Usually caretaker positions have potential to include light house cleaning, laundry, shopping, rides to appointments, grocery shopping, meal prep, and cooking as well as any other mobility type assistance that might be needed. I would have to say that the best way to screen for this position or how i would do it personally is to make sure that the caretaker has a sense of compassion for the work that they do. I would make sure that the person has some experience with people who have limited mobility and that they are able to be assertive in meeting the needs of your family.

What you've described is Non-Medical Caregiver. Nationwide these have various names Helper-Companion Services-Personal Assistant, when searching for one near you I'd first ask friends/family if they know one. There are many options to consider as well if you'd prefer a company or individual providing the service for your husband. I hope this help. Take Care

Hi Pegotty , I hope by now you have received some good help. I am at the moment doing exactly what you have described you need, and more, for a couple who deal with several health issues. They have chosen to call what I do for them as house manager/ personal assistant. I not only do the light cleaning and everything else you noted you needed but I take them to doc appointments , run errands, take their 4 cats to their doc appointments etc. I have a background both in health care ( Nurse Finders) and in professional cleaning and cross - contamination training and awareness ( National Semi-Conductor and my own cleaning business started in 1986). So I would do the background check and ask what prior experience they have in both personal health aid and home management and cleaning. Wish you and your loved one the best!

On call, and the best way to screen is to get full knowledge of the person by having a sit down sort of like a one on one interview and make a list of questions that suit your spouses needs as to yours,

I would start with advertising for house KEEPER. This title is a little different than house CLEANER...I think that will reach a market that will work for you. If you are in Bismarck, I might be able to help you out. I offer housecleaning duties primarily, but based off of your description. . .I could possibly work your request into my schedule?? I have my own business (Totally Pristine LLC). If you are interested, you can respond to this site ( I check my messages daily) Typically it will take about 30 minutes for me to come by and give you a quote from that. I would have some times open this week or next if that works for you? Thanks again! ~~Amanda~~

This job could be referred to Personal Care Assistance or Caregiver. There is no best way to screen for this other than conducting an Interview/References and also if you know how tasks should be done, you could have caregiver perform such and if its not consistent or done properly then you can decide.

I would consider it a "caregiver" job, and probably the best way to screen would be to first look up potential candidates social media accounts, since you can spot immediate red flags if the person conducts themselves in a way that you disapprove of. Then I would definitely call personal references and get character descriptions. You could also look them up on the public records site for any legal issues (in Indiana it is mycase.in.gov).

In home care taker...Have them come in while your not there and pop in on them and a monitor. Do a background check but sometimes that is not enough. When it comes to family, do everything in your power to let the caretaker know, that you may pop in, or you may not or somebody will. It will scare anyone just looking to get by and just get paid. Hope that helps!!

I would call this a domestic helper, or family helper. It is very valuable to find the right person for this position. You want a person you can depend on. When your husband is alone, he will need more than just someone to clean and cook. He will need someone to listen to him, and engage in interesting conversation. That being said you, should have some conversations with the candidate, to evaluate their basic beliefs and perspectives. and then you will know if the candidate will be a good fit

You would need an in-home health care provider. If the situation requires any physical contact at all you would not want to post the job for a "housekeeper". There are many levels of in-home providers depending on your needs. This site has some very good articles to point you in the right direction. There are care providers who can do both for you and may be covered by medical insurance depending on the situation. Good luck!

If I were you I'd post under the caretaker area. I clean houses, and when I see someone post for senior care/home care in the housekeeping area, I wonder why they posted there and not in the caregiver area. While caring for someone sometimes involves cleaning, the converse is not true for most house cleaners.

You can put it under senior companion, even if the person is not a senior, it still puts out the general idea that they will be looking after an adult from time to time. Or you can put it in errands and odd jobs.
