I need a home cleaner first because frankly my house is a disaster area!  But once the initial disaster is cleaned up, I then need someone bi-monthly. So do I need to post 2 separate jobs or can one listing suffice?

Ann in Amissville, VA
Nov. 26, 2018

I was hoping to have the same person come back for the bi-monthly visits rather than have to break in a new worker.

I'm also wondering about the pay scale. I would expect that the big cleaning should warrant a higher pay rate but does the pay rate stay the same for the recurring bi-monthly visits? I wish to pay a fair rate but I'm also not wealthy.

I live in a one-level, 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath rambler with a basement. We will do our own laundry, cat box maintenance, and trash disposal. Initially, I am looking for someone to not only do deep cleaning (windows, inside & out, walls-baseboards-door jams-window sills, remove pet hair from furniture), but I also need help organizing my yarn and craft supplies, swap out my summer wear with my winter wear (both clothing & shoes).  There is "stuff" just sitting around, cluttering up the place and collecting dust. I can't do any of this because I am disabled...mostly bed-ridden. I have some storage totes and would be willing to get more if they are needed.

As for bi-weekly expectations, I'm looking for typical dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming (only have 2 areas rugs, one in the living room and one in the dining room), and perhaps once a month vacuum under the couch and recliner (we have 2 cats so just trying to keep down the pet hair). Once a month vacuum the couch and chair.  I would like both bathrooms scrubbed, throw rugs washed, towels washed, once a month toss the inner shower curtain in the wash with the towels. In the bedrooms I would like the linens changed, dusting, sweeping, damp mop, scatter rugs either shook out or vacuumed, window ledges and door frames dusted and once a month wiped down.  In the kitchen I would like the stove cleaned thoroughly and perhaps have the over self-cleaned once every couple of months. All the counters cleaned thoroughly which means under the toaster, coffee station, and other things that sit on the counter normally. Maybe once a month the ceiling fan cleaned. I'd like the cabinets, fridge, backsplashes, and window sills wiped down. The trash can cleaned each visit, as well as the floor mopped. Some spot cleaning on the walls and door frames, light switch and plug plates, and lamp shades dusted.

I think that's it. So am I expecting too much from one person or do I need a team of two? I really don't know but I look forward to any feedback. Thank you in advance.

In my opinion one posting is sufficient. I would recommend that with the amount of work you would like to have done in your home, splitting it up into two days for the initial cleaning. Working on the what I call a deep clean to begin with. This covers all your baseboards, doors, window seals, fans, shutters or blinds, face plates and cabinet fronts, this with your normal clean. the second day concentrate on the organazation.

You are not expecting to much for one person to do. All these things you ask would be something a typical house cleaner would do. However laundry sometimes is not one of them, and they would more then likely charge more for that. As it takes time out of actually cleaning areas.Everything can be done by the same person.

you don't need two team for the cleaning, just a person can do it and when you hire the person explain your needs to the person you will be needing help in the future that its not just one time job by doing that you can negotiate payment and availability with the helper.

Hi there, just saw your post.. I understand you're needing some real help around the house. Having one or two people do the initial clean up might be helpful since it seems you want quite a bit done, after that i think one person would be just fine! Thinking about how much to pay someone is tricky and maybe different for each person, personally i would want more for the initial clean then i would ask for what i have posted for my hourly: for instance i get paid $15-20 an hour for my "normal" jobs but for your deep cleaning i might ask for $25-30 and then go back down once i am just coming once a week. I hope this helps! Thanks for sharing! Have a great day!

I would recommend to just keep both jobs under one listening. As a student, I say it would be easier to do that way so someone like me may know in advance and they would still have a little job when they are not in school.

Hey there, For the services you are wanting, especially the deep cleaning I would suggest you get a team of at least two people. Two people reduce the amount of time it would take to get your entire home clean, and it ensures the cleaning is done correctly. Some deep cleaning services can be a little costly, so I would suggest that you research and make sure that you are getting the best bang for your buck. I definitely believe that having regular team of people to come out and clean your home definitely helps with consistency, and not only that, you are building a rapport with that person to where they know what you want without you telling them. I really hope this was of assistance to you.

Hello, my name is Jennifer and I think I can help ya out here. When posting the service you need, you can post it as a deep cleaning needed and then specify in the description of services that this will be for an ongoing position and that after the initial deep cleaning then you would like to make this a bi-weekly position. You will only need to submit one request. You can even post it for a deep cleaning and then if you like the work you can tell them you would like for them to return for a bi-weekly cleaning if interested or available. Either way should work just fine. Its completely up to you. I am available to help you out with your cleaning needs if you want to check out my profile and see if you think I would be a good fit :)

The initial clean would be more than the recurring clean, depending on what is needed. The organizing and cleaning of the craft area would be its own job, priced just for that, being a one time thing pretty much. The bi-weekly clean would be a set fee. One person could do the work. Two would simply cut the time, but the fee would be the same. Hope that helps! The monthly items could be divided into a rotation with the bi-weekly schedule.

Hello my name is Audrey and your needs are just like one of my first Care jobs. Regarding the initial deep clean to be honest 2 people would get that done faster and yes the payment for this would be higher.I see you world prefer one person to do both and I agree with that, knowing and trusting the same person in your home is important! With that being said it may take a little longer for the deep cleaning to get done if your ok with that, I'm sure who ever you hire might be as well. I would be understanding of that and would work out a payment plan for all of your needs. You might however want deep clean done as quick as possible if so, I would hire 2 or more people to expedite the process. When the light daily cleaning need to get done it shouldn't take as much time and of course won't cost you as much. Good luck with your decision. I hope I was of some help. Best to you Audrey

Believe it or not this is pretty typical. You could do it either way allow a regular person to come in with additional person and get a lot of heavy work done. Then its really a matter of maintenance. Or instead of having everything done in one visit, you could have someone come in and do some "regular" cleaning like the weekly stuff and then have them send an hour doing a "project" it will take a little longer to get to everything but one person could get to all of it over the course of several weeks.

Hello! In my experience... the types of things you're requesting to have done are really within the "normal" realms of a house cleaning. Maybe for your initial clean, you'd want your cleaner to bring on a second person to help out - especially with the window washing and extras. But I think that once your initial deep clean is done, these things would be easily handled by just one person. Depending on where you're located -- I'd love to be able to help you out!

I would post one job and if you like the person you get, ask them about continuing with ongoing work. If not, repost and look for someone else. You shouldn't have to do much to train an experienced worker. If you get an inexperienced one, but they look like they want to work and will move at a good pace, then go ahead and keep them a bit to see if they work out. If you can find a good, fast, experienced cleaner, they should be able to do the deep cleaning in a day, though it may be a full 8 hours. But good cleaners are rare and you may need a team of two for it to not take all day. You could also have someone do it split over a couple of visits. A lot of cleaners will not do windows or will charge a premium to do those, especially since you normally have to remove part of the window to get the inside of the frame cleaned. You don't necessarily have to pay more for the deep cleaning, though good chemicals are not cheap. Also, self cleaning ovens never really get the oven clean. You will still need someone to clean it out once in a while. Some good chemicals will make it easy. A good worker should be able to finish your place in 4 - 5 hours biweekly, but pay them accordingly or else you will be paying two people a lower rate and it will cost you as much if not more.

I remember doing cleaning jobs like this when I was working for Molly Maid, I think you may need a team of two maybe four. Your first cleaning would be more of a one time deep clean so that should pay generously as for the biweekly maintenance I think you and the person or persons you hire can discuss and negotiate the rate together. Hope this helps!

Cleaning is cleaning for the most part. The rate should stay the same and then consider tipping when the work is unusually difficult, because extra effort is sometimes worth extra reward. On whether you need 1 or 2 people all depends on how much time you wish someone to spend on your house. One person may be able to manage it well. But two may be a positive thing, especially if they work as a team, to cover for each other and maybe make it so they take up less of your time. It really all depends on what the regular task list looks like every week and how much "additional" work you add to it. Good luck :)

I do big initial cleanings, and weekly, bi-weekly cleaning. I charge the same hourly rate for both. I also have 3 cats, and I know how the cat hair can build up if not vacuumed on a regular basis. Also, my oldest daughter (40) cleans with me, and I with her when possible. we both can supply excellent references. No job is to big, or too small. We both enjoy cleaning. Thanks.

Hi, I think one posting will suffice but be very detailed and transparent. If the house is a disaster, could a cleaner assume that is a regular occurrence and would like to stay on top of their initial work. A thorough cleaning and then the following week began the alternate cleaning/keeping. A month of evaluating should be used to determine if your house is a high cleaning or moderate cleaning house between the on and off weeks. For example the cleaner does the initial clean and you start them two weeks after that clean, but they are back at square one, it wouldn't be fair to expect them to do the second week at a rate lower than the first because the work load is high demanding on them. retention and quality is important and should be considered when selecting a service provider. I hope this helps Sheilah

If you put what you just said in the ad, I see no reason why you would need more than one. Be prepared to pay more for the initial cleaning. The same person or team would have a much better idea what would be needed after the initial cleaning than a new person.

Also with my exsperiance in house cleaning I would suggest that who ever does it brings a team mate to help .

Great question. It sounds like you need a deep clean first, followed by routine maintenance. In your new request, specify that you need a major deep clean first, and would like to retain someone afterwards to provide routine maintenance.

Any housekeeper you decide to hire should know the first maybe even second clean will take longer. I personally request the same rate for both. What you should expect is a full deep cleaning to start. Then each clean thereafter should get your home cleaner and make rotating cleaning tasks an option.

Hi, my name is Patti, and I am going to try and answer your questions. The job requirements are vast, and yes, in the beginning, you may need to hire two people. You are asking for help both in organizing and cleaning. It appears that both of these requirements are going to take time, so this is what I propose: 1) Hire someone to complete the organization portion of the job. It is difficult to clean if there is a lot of "stuff" in the way. Once everything is where you want it, then 2) hire someone to do the cleaning. The organization portion of your requirements in that only you know where you want your items. Payment should be fair and equitable; the same goes for the housekeeping part of the position. You want someone that is dependable and reliable and willing to work hard. Once the organization part if completed, and the deep cleaning is done, keeping the house up on a bi-weekly

From your posting, and my experience, what you need first is a deep clean. This is a thorough cleaning of everything from top (ceiling fans, moldings, cob webs) to bottom (base boards, under furniture, inside of fridge, oven etc) first. This usually takes two solid 8 hr days, at least depending on the size of house. (I used to do deep cleans seasonally on beach cottages so I am very familiar with them.) It is hard work and maybe a bit expensive but worth it. When I take on a brand new client, I always push to do a deep clean first, that way after, we are starting from "ground zero" cleaning wise. In my opinion, I would post separate but mention on the deep clean, that you are interested in them also doing bimonthly if they are open to it, because then they would already be familiar with your property and specifications on things. Depending on the area you are in, the deep clean would be $20-25/hr or a flate rate to be settled on. And the bimonthly $15-20/hr. Best of luck in finding the right fit!!

You should post the major clean/organization separately and first. The people who will want to perform a major cleaning and do it well might be different from people who will do maintenance cleaning. Before you write the post, spend some time clearly identifying and describing the tasks you want completed for the big clean/organization, then separately identify the weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly cleaning tasks. The checklist is a start in making sure you get what you want. It will also help manage your and their expectations as you negotiate a mutually satisfactory agreement. After you narrow the applicants down to 2 or 3, invite the finalists for the big clean/organization to survey your home in order to get a better sense of what needs done and how long it will take them. That way you are less likely to have someone say yes to the assignment and change their mind after they get started. The person you hire for the big clean/organization should earn more, but before setting a wage you should consider if you will be providing supplies and tools, and that the big clean/organization may take several days or weeks to ready the home for improved living and daily maintenance. If you'd like the big clean done sooner rather than later, and are not as concerned about overseeing work, you'll need to hire a team of two. If you get tired easily and won't be able to supervise/assist for more than a few hours, then you might want to hire one cleaner who is fine working successive half-day shifts. My suggestion for one person reporting for work a few hours each day on consecutive days to complete tasks with tools and supplies you provide is $50 per four hours. That puts the burden on you to be ready for them to work, with supplies and tools you have purchased on hand at the beginning of everyday. If you give yourself a $500 limit for the single cleaner working 4 hours a day, that means you get 40 hours of work, 2 weeks of half days. Is that enough time to complete the task? What will you do if you're satisfied with the speed and quality of their work, but the process itself requires more time? My suggestion for a team of two who bring their own supplies is $40/hr. You'll need to make sure their tools and solutions are in good condition, appropriate for your household's surfaces, the tasks to complete, etc. For instance, they need to have a good vacuum, one of the brands and models recommended by Good Housekeeping, Consumer Reports, or other reputable agencies. And, you'll need to decide how much you're going to spend. If you only have $500, will the team of two people be able to work 2 consecutive, 8 hour days to complete the big clean/organization? Will your family leave the home or stay out the way to not impede their progress? Are you comfortable setting firm boundaries, such as, "I expect you to report for work at 8 am, take lunch during 12-1 pm, and have finished for the day by 5 pm?" Once you are satisfied with the quality and progress of work on the big clean/organization, ask the cleaner you hired to review your list of the weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly cleaning tasks. They can make suggestions and help you finalize the schedule. If the cleaner expresses interest in the new assignment for maintenance cleaning (the hourly wage for 2 cleaners should decrease to reflect the lessened difficulty of the new assignment), and you think you can continue to work with them, great. But if neither one of you wants to continue the arrangement, at least you have a foundation for future maintenance.

Hello, After reading a;; your need I can honestly tell you that you don't need a team to clean your house! One person can deal with it. Its a regular work I already do in every house I clean. The payment rate depends how messy and dirty your house is. It may go from $20-25. If a house is not clean for long time the housekeeper may ask your for some extra payment then you can pay in regular bases. I don't think your house will take more than 4h/visit. Sometimes when is needing a deep cleaning as windows, fridge and etc. you may expect that your housecleaner will spend more hours working. Hope my answer helped you. if you need anyone to clean your house I am available every Friday. Olga

I have taken care of some pretty good disasters and continued on to be the regular cleaning person. It all depends on if you like them ,if they like you, if they can handle pets, if you can handle how they work, or how long it takes. I myself charge extra for the deep clean because it is much more labor intensive and uses a lot more supplies. I will use the supplies in the house but then if they don't work I have some supplies I use that really do the trick to get really tough dirt loosened up. I think I do a good job and deserve to be paid for the value and peace I bring to you and your house. Once the deep cleaning is done I drop the price down to a maintenance wage. Generally, there is a $5-$10 difference depending on what all needs to be done when the last time it was cleaned if I have to get on ladders and use all of my own supplies. I work 4-6 hours at a time on a deep clean and come back to finish when you want to schedule, whether it be a week or a day. The maintenance for bi-weekly generally will take 3-4 hours and as I said would be on a maintenance fee schedule.

Hello my name is Latrese. I've been house cleaning for quite a while now. With the right housecleaner you can get this job done with one housecleaner. The first cleaning is always going to be the highest simply because it's going to take longer and the house cleaner is just coming in learning your home and your needs.I like to schedule a meet and greet with the client before negotiating any prices on the service they need. Before I leave out their door we have agreed on some type of flat rate or hourly price. After you get your home in order things usually go much quicker for the house cleaner. You must remember though that every house cleaner is different one may come in and say "oh no they cannot do it!" or "they need more help." I'm not sure where you are from, but if you can't find anyone and I'm in your area please feel free to reach out to me for a meet and greet. Thanks

No because whoever you hire should be able to take care of both of your needs. When I personally go and price a house I suggest that you start with a deep clean and once the deep clean is done the person should be able to keep it up when they return to do the regular cleaning day.

Hi, One posting should be sufficient. Look over those who are available and try out the one you think fits your needs. If you are not satisfied try someone else. Blessings, Mary

I appreciate your thoughtfulness but I think a 2 hour commute one way is too far to go to clean someone's house and I certainly can't afford to pay for the cost of gas plus wear and tear on your vehicle, so I believe I'll pass. But good luck to you!

This is what my partner and I specialize in. What you have described above may take a couple visits to get accomplished. We like to organize first then come in and do a deep clean then we can keep you caught up. I don't like to give prices over the phone. I'd be happy to come meet you and see what you have in mind and we can find a way to work together!

So you will be paying for your own plane ticket, right? I sure can't afford to fly you from Michigan to Virginia. You might want to pay closer attention to where a person lives before you make an offer. But good luck to you and your partner.

You're kidding, right? May I suggest that before you make offers to accept a job, you actually LOOK at where the person is. I sure can't afford to fly you from Texas to Virginia. So while I appreciate the offer, I'm going to say no thank you. But good luck to you.

You can make two publications, but in this case, the publication is clear and we can easily understand and get in touch. I want to help you in all you describe, it'll be easy for me because I like that job.

If you have a aggressive cleaner, one is perfect. I do an initial cleaning that is higher but very throughout. Then some of the things you are requesting are in the plans anyways. Iam very detailed and efficient. I am a very good organizer as well, have done many closets and garages as well. I would like if you give me a call and we could visit and I could give you some great references as well. Thank you very much. cindi

Cindi, honey, I would want to hire someone that pays attention to detail. Do you not see that I live in VIRGINIA?? I believe I will pass on your offer...you're too far away in Illinois. But I wish you success. Just pay more attention before you make an offer.

I am not a professional cleaner, but from what I heard from ladies that are in this profession, you can definitely use 1 person. Most cleaners will do your Initial Deep cleaning for a set fee, depending on what is needed and how big the place is, they will be able to give you a set price, and they will then quote the rate for the maintenance cleaning. I am a Home Organizer and definitely can help with the organizing part, but I don't know where you are located, I am in New York and you might be in California...lol.. my rates are very affordable, so in the event you might be in NY feel free to contact me. Organization is a different field than cleaning. Good luck with your search, and I would suggest to inquire about the type of services provided and rates prior to choosing a suitable helper.

Hello and welcome to the Care.com community. There is no need to apply or to place 2 separate listings. Just give a detailed summary of what your request will be for the home clean up or as you call it the disaster clean up(smiles).. and a description of what is expected during the post clean up and I will be able to service your home care needs.

You should be able to find a cleaner that can take care of the initial clean up as well as the bi monthly follow up. I don't agree that one pay rate should be higher then the other, the initial will take longer yes, but should not be a higher hourly rate. I personally charge 20/hrly. Some people feel that is too high until they see what a qualified, efficient cleaner can get accomplished in each hour. I don't advise going with the cheapest rate nor should you have to pay 30 to 50 dollars an hour. Lastly, you are not asking too much for one person to complete. Good luck finding a great cleaner.

Hello! My name is Jess and this honestly sounds like a job for s team of 2 that are reliable, but with everything that you would like done it could be handled by one person who worked Monday-Friday and you and the cleaner sat down and write out weekly schedules and duties and what not.

I have been through many disasters.! You simply cannot do a good cleaning when there is clutter all around...so that is the first thing that should be addressed and all taken care of on the first day. The second day would be for the deep clean with all the areas of each room from top to bottom. You should never have to tell a professional cleaner what needs to be vacuumed or wiped, only that which you "don't want touched".! They should know and every surface of every room is always included and should be left looking, smelling and sparkling like a model home...and if they don't, they are not professional, and don't waste your money.! Bi-weekly cleaning is maintenance for the deep cleaning that was just done. Walls, light switches, lamps, fans, are all part of a room.. the professional cleaner addresses EVERYTHING that needs attention..no matter what 'week' it is.! The pay scale is by the hour, and is agreed upon by both parties before any work is done.

Nope, One post will do. You can allow the person to give you 2 quotes. One for the initial disaster clean up and then another one for maintenance. For what your looking for (the initial cleaning) you can expect to pay a lot. It seems like you might need to purge and declutter before the cleaner arrives. This will help cut back on the price you will pay for a cleaning person. Not every cleaning person wants to take on the organizing side as well as the cleaning. I hope this helps. Best wishes!
