Do you have to pay to apply to jobs?

I applied to a few jobs and when you go to your messages to see who you sent a message to and click on it it says that you have to pay to upgrade your account so the job you applied to can respond? Does anyone else get this?

I don't have to pay. I never have and I have used this site for over 8 years.

How so? What do you do? Do you send email and phone number. 8 years if working from this site it good. I have been on for a month. Got blank responses as they tried to communicate.

Applying to at least pet care jobs is no longer free. This is leading pet caregivers to other sites now, which is why so many of them are popping up and becoming popular. It's too bad care.com didn't take into consideration losing pet care givers due to cost.

My hang up is this: why do I have to pay to maybe get paid?

This message we are all seeing, what it comes down to is that you can apply to any job you want the people do get your application, but when you go into your messages what you are seeing as that message to upgrade if you want to unlock your messages means to allow you to converse directly back and for with the person who has the job available.  When you are on the free plan, the care.com people play as the go between and they will relay the messages back and forth between you and the potential employer.  The only real big down side to this is the delay in getting messages because I do believe our messages go directly to the employer, but their messages have to go to care.com team first but only on the free plans.  So that is what that "Unlock" warning is all about whenever you go into you messages to see if anyone has answered your applications yet.

I have  been using Care.com for 9 months and have not received one job offer out of the 1000 applications I have sent. I am on the sight everyday and my profile is up to date.  Except I have no "Rating" and no "Reviews."  I have made numerous failed attempts to "request a review" from previous pet care clients that I have worked for in the past.  Every attempt resulted in the sight stating "an unknown error occurred." I have emailed Care.com for assistance (because there is no phone# for Care.com) and was told to clear out my browser history in the search engine.  This has not fixed the problem.  I have 21 fantastic references that cant post a "review" or give me a rating to my profile.  This has been an enormous amount of wasted time and effort. I am thoroughly disappointed and pissed off!  Care.com is a Big Rip Off!!!!

I have had a similar problem with having my reviews posted.

As it was explained to me, either the care seeker or care giver must be a premium member, in order to communicate with each other. I think this is true, because when I had the basic profile, I did have someone contact me, regarding a job opportunity. I had the same thing happen. When I "applied" for a job, it shaded out my message, and said I needed to "unlock" my account, in order for the care seeker to see my application and communicate with me. I just upgraded my profile to premium today. I have applied to ten jobs but have not received any messages, yet. I'm hoping to hear something soon. Also, if you call care.com, they will give you a promo code for 20% off of your upgrade. Instead of paying $20 for a month, I paid $16, which I will also write off as an expense on my taxes. Good luck!!!

I upgrage to one month $20 comes with free backround check etc i just joined.. just one month test drive it.. if nothing happens in a month im cancelling it.. There are so many people that are posting that they need housekeepers and a lot of them are very close to me so i am really hoping that they consider me.. But if they don't i quick care.com  You cannot see responses unless you upgrade nothing is free.. I only can suggest you give it a try for a month 20.00 

I paid the $20 and have landed 3 jobs within the first 2 weeks. 2 are cleaning jobs for $50 for 4 hours work once a week, the other is a combo of companion and care for elderly and light housekeeping and meal prep one day every other week for $100 for 5-6 hours so the daughter can get some errands and a break without worrying about her father.. So as a retired person living on a pension that extra $400 a month was worth the $20.

Is the $20 for the background check or to upgrade to premium? I'm really confused. i upgraded last month and still have no responses. I have three jobs that I'm interested in my area and I applied for them and even gave them my email address to get in touch with me and still nothing. I downgraded at the end of september but I'm thinking about upgrading again if it will benefit me.

I upgraded today for the $20, but it's saying a background check is $59! How is everyone getting it for free?

Yes, I'm also coming across the "Apply Now (4 credits)" requirement too.  It's only coming up under the pet-sitting category.  When I click on it, it says, "Get the attention you deserve! *Apply with credits and reduce your competition *Get 1 credit back on declined applications

And then care.com pitches the following credit bundles:

-10 credits (only 90 cents per credit) for $9

-25 credits (Recommended) (Save 16% only 76 cents per credit) for $19

-50 credits (Best Value) (Save 36% only 56 cents per credit) for $29

And here's the fine print... By clicking submit you agree that your credit card will charged according to the number of credits you selected. Your purchase or receipt of credits represents the purchase or receipt of credits that can be used to apply to certain jobs. You agree that all sales of credits are final and non-refundable. Credits expire after 90 days of issuance.

They say I have to pay $10 just to contact one person once.  We only wanted one person for a small one-time job, therefore, we decided to just get someone from friends and other contacts, rather than care.com as we didn't even know if the person we wanted was available.  It seems like a shame as the applicants description was really good.  I wish Care.com would change their business model so that you could pay $1 for one day.  I'm not surprised that some people never get called, given care.com's system.

I am a bit suspicious..meaning I just joined... I got 3 messages from different names/locations, to walk the same dog...I am thinking Care.com is sending fake messages to get me to join/pay.  Would not be the first time.

I have also received text messages from people saying they got my info from care.com.

I would ignore anything coming to you as a text message, esp. if they ask you to contact them directly. Care.com has their own messaging system. You can report the texts to Care.com for verification if you like. Usually anything suspicious, i.e. direct texting, asking for any personal info, offering uncommonly high pay, identical postings, strange wording(you’ll know it when you see it), amongst others, is 99.9% a scam and should be reported should you have the wherewithal to do so. That’s just my experience.

Ken, You are definitely listening to your gut feeling, and you're on the right track! I've posted one to you making it known to Sheila whats happening on her website! Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to matter at the top either, shame shame on Care.com. I say that hoping these comment from so many of us would count for something. I can see why I've heard others say its a waste of time & money for us sincerely seeking employment. I'm definitely on board! I posted a previous one in reply on May 9th.

Care.com blocked the phone number i left, even when I spelled it out and blocked out my email address as well, saying it was for security purposes.

It is. You will get scammed and spammed to death. Just saying.

Is this where I make community aware of scams being posted on this website? Sheila are you monitoring the company? And what can be done about this ongoing trap? I gave many names at least 1yr or 2 ago, yet care.com did nothing about it! By what I've read, it's obvious I am not the only one seeing this happen on your company website. Recently I've run across 10 more asking for our personal info for what may seem legitimate but aren't, plus replies to be sent to THEIR personal email! The minute I make them aware of these coincidental consistencies they close acct and pop up elsewhere! These scammers initiate high paying jobs, then urge us to communicate off website. All Identical MO. What was preventable, is now (widespread) prevalent!

I leave my number in my comments and advise them to leave a message and I wil contact them as soon as I can, which usually within the hour.. For safety I use a different phone than my major carrier..

I was told by care.com that they do different things in different states. There are "test" states. So what they require in one state may not apply or work for someone in another state

I just joined care last week paid the 20 and i was hired today for a cleaning job 15 an hour.. I am looking for more clients. I believe that letting them check out your backround is a plus that comes free with your 20 dollars.. So yes i suggest you do pay that 20 dollars..

No,  they recently started this credit thing and sometimes it asks if you want to use a credit to be more likely to get the job.  I've yet to figure out what they are all about... good luck! 

When i click on an application i sent it tells me to upgrade to unlock so the family can reply.

My guess, Kim, is that applicants who use a credit to apply for a job will have their application appear at the top of an employer's in box and/or the employer may receive a text notification to alert them of your application if you signed up for CareChat texting. This makes sense to me considering how many applicants are applying for the same job. I've not seen anything on the site to confirm this though.

I have been wondering how credits work too. My guess is that when an applicant applies a credit towards an application, their application is moved to the top of the employer’s in box and/or they receive a text message alert about your application if they signed up for CareChat texting. Am not sure how credits would be advantageous otherwise. Also, since so few have a starting pay range of at least $20, my guess is that a lot of applicants who buy credits will be using one to apply for those jobs. Since they all can’t go to the top of the in box, that wouldn’t make them that advantageous. It would also make it expensive for applicants who are going for jobs paying $10-15 since most are in that range. That is, although most employers post a range, in my experience, most aren’t willing to pay more than the minimum.

I have years of experience and several wonderful recommendations. I have applied to at least 15 jobs and have heard from no one. I can't imagine what is going on. Very disappointed. I used to get so many responses I had to turn them away. Something is going on with Care.com and it's not good.

I've signed up for email and text messages for pet sitting gigs. Texts are spotty. Sometimes they're sent, sometimes they're not. Typically, I'll get an email notification of an "available" job AFTER the job is closed. I can understand running ads on the page or charging pet owners to get quality helpers, but charging people looking for side gigs? It doesn't sound like they've really thought that out. I guess it's time to make my own Facebook pet-sitting page with profile, reviews and just run Facebook ads.

I don’t understand everything, but I think this much is true. You can apply for jobs. Those apps will get to the employer. However, you cannot contact them otherwise, that is unless they contact you. Then you can talk back and forth as much as you like from what I can tell. It’s true, I always wonder since I apply to nearly 15 jobs and finally hear back from one. Many of the jobs I applied to were brand new and as far as I know mine was the first response. At least a few were less than a mile from my location. Of course I have not invested in the premium membership due to financial reasons, ironically. I did like several years ago when I first joined and things were drastically different from how they are now. As I remember, it was within the $20-30 range and I got a background check included. What they’re offering now scares my wallet.

I was able to communicate with three people before 3 people before being asked to upgrade to allow employers to respond. Wondering if they employer really cannot contact me now. Can't find an answer as to how may messages are allowed before care.com stops being free..
