It may have  been scary at one point in our lives, but typically with a little time  and knowledge, we learn to live with them. Those fears are even greater,  however, if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.care.com\/en-ca\/profiles\/child-care\">your own child<\/a> starts to show symptoms of allergies.<\/p><p>In  truth, allergies can be frightening, especially for parents who have little or no experience with them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.care.com\/c\/en-ca\/7-tips-teaching-calmness-kids\/\">But there is no need to panic.<\/a> The best thing you can do is educate yourself on how to test for and manage allergies. Luckily, this is relatively easy.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-should-you-test-for-allergies\">When should you test for allergies?<\/h2><p>Children can show symptoms of allergies at any age. Experts say that allergyskin tests are generally held off until at least six months of age.Sometimes symptoms of allergies in very young children can go away ontheir own before this time.<\/p><p>In general, if your child has anadverse reaction to any type of food or medication, it is important tolet your doctor or allergist know right away. Chances are they will want to test for allergies at this point depending on the severity of thereaction. They may also recommend closely monitoring the symptoms for aweek or two to see if they persist.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-allergy-symptoms\">Common allergy symptoms<\/h2><p>Some of the most common symptoms of allergies in children include, in varying severity:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Irritated skin or rash<\/li><li>Sneezing<\/li><li>Redness and watering of eyes<\/li><li>Swollen lips, tongue, eyes and\/or face<\/li><li>Tightness in chest<\/li><li>Vomiting, stomach aches<\/li><\/ul><p>If any of these symptoms appear severe or are affecting thewhole body rather than the site of exposure, seek medical attentionimmediately as it can be harmful and potentially life-threatening.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-expect-when-testing\">What to expect when testing<\/h2><p>There are multiple types of tests that your allergist may or may notrecommend using with your child. Commonly used skin tests are basedaround exposing you to a small amount of an allergen and monitoring your body&rsquo;s response. Blood tests are also often used to determineallergies.<\/p><p>If you have allergies, then exposure to an offensivesubstance will cause your body to create special antibodies, resultingin various allergy symptoms.<\/p><p>All of these tests are perfectly safe and can help pinpoint exactly what is causing allergic reactions.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-life-with-allergies\">Life with Allergies<\/h2><p>For  the child with allergies, it can take some time adjusting to living  with them.
