That 24-point gap? It means many employees may be struggling in ways their managers never see.<\/p><p>As a manager, you&rsquo;re in a unique position to catch burnout early. Here&rsquo;s your go-to checklist for spotting the signs, opening conversations, and connecting your team to real support.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-know-what-burnout-looks-like\">Step 1: Know what burnout looks like<\/h2><p>Burnout rarely announces itself. It hides in the day-to-day. Here&rsquo;s what to watch for:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They&rsquo;re always tired, even after PTO<\/li><li>They&rsquo;re more irritable, withdrawn, or reactive<\/li><li>They&rsquo;re missing deadlines or avoiding tasks<\/li><li>They&rsquo;ve stopped engaging in meetings or group convos<\/li><li>They&rsquo;ve mentioned family stress or caregiving strain<\/li><li>They seem emotionally disconnected or unmotivated<\/li><li>They&rsquo;ve become more negative or self-critical<\/li><\/ul><p>In a recent Care Talk,<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caredotcom.zoom.us\/rec\/play\/j2RZEqHNqXZYIj0bJpRIm8lm83DUwRJG4fULBLXfrEybR4s78yyywbUZ5FCV0jsAb9AjZn9AcZE4XZep.w_cGvnRivQFQ8J1v?accessLevel=meeting&amp;canPlayFromShare=true&amp;from=share_recording_detail&amp;startTime=1743699688000&amp;componentName=rec-play&amp;originRequestUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fcaredotcom.zoom.us%2Frec%2Fshare%2Fw5yEmdc-uVoOVaGNsKnlP9wzZsYaiMvY8CbZMQG8P3mJrCgJp3g_3sd9O0eIAY1V.2--aLlzLF0M94VBR%3FstartTime%3D1743699688000\"><strong><em>Emotional Wellness: Overcoming Burnout<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> licensed social worker Sheresa Elliott shared that burnout often starts with &ldquo;just not feeling like yourself&rdquo; and slowly spirals into complete mental and emotional depletion.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-start-the-conversation\">Step 2: Start the conversation<\/h2><p>Try these check-in questions during your next 1:1:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&ldquo;How are you really doing?&rdquo;<\/li><li>&ldquo;What&rsquo;s felt especially heavy or overwhelming lately?&rdquo;<\/li><li>&ldquo;Are you getting the support you need outside of work?&rdquo;<\/li><li>&ldquo;What&rsquo;s one thing I can help take off your plate?&rdquo;<\/li><li>&ldquo;Have you had a chance to use any of your care benefits?&rdquo;<\/li><\/ul><p>Tip: Don&rsquo;t try to &ldquo;fix&rdquo; everything, just listen. And normalize burnout as something that&rsquo;s human, not shameful.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3-know-what-resources-and-benefits-are-available\">Step 3: Know what resources and benefits are available<\/h2><p>As a manager, you can play a critical role in making sure your team knows about the resources and tools provided by your company, and that using those benefits is <em>encouraged<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Start by reviewing what your company offers, so that you can point your team in the right direction. This could include:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)<\/li><li>Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)<\/li><li>Mental health or wellness tools<\/li><li>Flexible work options<\/li><li>Caregiving support benefits<\/li><\/ul><p>Caregiving is one of the top causes of burnout. Keep showing up.<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Follow up in your next 1:1<\/li><li>Celebrate when they take time off or use support resources<\/li><li>Watch for lingering signs of burnout<\/li><li>Keep advocating for a sustainable team culture<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-thought-burnout-isn-t-inevitable\">Final thought: Burnout isn&rsquo;t inevitable<\/h2><p>When employees have access to the right support, especially the ones balancing family care responsibilities, productivity can increase, absenteeism can drop, and retention can improve.
