About the business
Our History
Established at Virginia Theological Seminary in 1986, The Butterfly House Preschool (TBH) is a licensed childcare facility in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Our Program
At The Butterfly House (ages 2 to 6 years) and The Caterpillar Club (ages 6 weeks to 24 months), children interact daily, not only with children their own age, but with older and younger children. A diverse, mixed-age grouping gives every child an opportunity to successfully interact and allows for a gradual transition from one age group to another, thus minimizing anxiety by maintaining caregiver consistency.
Each week, we expose children to language, math, media, geography, science, and social studies, as well as opportunities to participate in drama, music, art, and physical education activities.
We operate our program both indoors and outdoors, as outdoor play is essential to healthy physical and mental development. Children spend a minimum of two hours outdoors every day except for in inclement weather.
Mission
The Butterfly House and Caterpillar Club (children under the age of 2) provide a healthy, safe, positive, and nurturing environment for all children. We optimize opportunities for each individual child's growth in these developmental areas:
- Social-Emotional
- Cognitive
- Linguistic
- Physical
- Creative
We encourage diversity in all aspects of our program, invite family participation, and foster positive community relationships.
Our Philosophy
We integrate emergent, child-centered, and play-based curricula, the theories of Loris Malaguzzi, Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Howard Gardner, and Arnold Gesell into a holistic approach to early childhood education. Based on these principles, we offer children a path to self-expression, communication, logical thinking, and problem-solving.
Our Teachers
We employ and train educators who understand children's developmental stages and are committed to providing experiences that encourage optimal learning. Our continuing education allows all staff to meet state licensing requirements, as well as better assisting you and your child's daily needs.
